Please, know the difference between the two, why do I get guys even at auto parts places when I give them my info on the car, for example....when I say firebird 3.8 blah blah blah, the ask, is that a chevy or pontiac......or vice versa, or on the street, they go, "hey nice car, is that a camaro," and im like...?????, no is a firebird. So, why is that, is it that these people are just trying to hard to fit in(the pontiac/chevy group),so hard that they dont know scrap:screwy: , or why??????? most everyone here can tell the difference between those by looking at them but the questions that are asked about them are about the specific mechanical differences are between those individual models.

So what if they dont know anything...thats why they ask the question in the first place. People that know its a firebird dont ask. They ask those questions because they dont know..but they want to know.

Well in all honesty, if they (those who ask by looking) are into the import I could see some of the confusion. It would be the same as half the time I have to ask, is that a Honda or Acura, albeit they are the same car (much like your point here).

As for the parts guys, well, some aren't the brightest bulbs in package as we all know. However, there is some legitamicy to their question in respects to are they asking who made the motor? Kinda makes sense.

refering to the original post about the guys at the autoparts store....its really hard to find a guy at the autoparts store who know jack about repairing cars much less anything about makes and models...i was redoing the drum brakes on a dodge caravan and when i went into pepboys and asked for the parts the guy just looked at me funny and had no idea. He thought they had stopped making drum brakes all together a long time ago and really didnt even know what they were or how they worked.

now you have those people who just want to learn but this guy works at a parts store and wasnt even a new guy...and yet they wouldnt hire me when i applied.....drives me nuts....

You really have to watch who you talk to behind the counter at the parts stores! I called up to get radiator hoses for my Mustang and the idiot asked..."um...is that a Ford or Chevy?" I imediately asked for a manager and said..."who are you guys hirering down there?" Then I told him what the idiot said and he says..."well, he's new". I said, I don't care if he's new, everybody knows Ford makes Mustangs! Then I told him that if that's the kind of people they hire, I'm taking my business elsewhere!! This happened ten years ago. I guess they still hire IDIOTS!!!

Yeah, they still use drum brakes (UNFORTUNEATELY). My wife's 03 Taurus has them on the rear. But yet the 96 and 97 Taurus's we had before had 4 wheel disc. Go figure?!

I understand your frustration. Like you I'm also a gearhead who has a good knowledge of cars and how they work and when I applied at those places in the past they never called me. But yet they'll hire some dork who doesn't even know what cars Ford and Chevy make! And they wonder why people get pissed off at them.

well most auto parts stores, (ones around here) they are just teenagers that are just trained to look up part numbers, or match part numbers...really they dont kno jackshit.

i found at my old college, that even people who were into cars didn't know jack shit.

i did my entire 1-year course without help because i knew it all already. most of the class couldn't change oil.

fair enough you go there to learn, but i was amazed by how little my class knew.

ive actually had good luck in hawaii with those guys.. sometimes, they mislabel the parts like radiator hoses/etc.. they go through the trouble of finding a hose that fits, if they dont have the right one (look for one the same size/shape). they're alright overall..theres this one guy there who has a 2nd gen, two 3rd, and 2 4th gen camaros.. so i just ask him.. :)

Truth be known, 2nd gen F-bodies are among to best factory performance cars ever offered by anyone (mass-produced). Between the early T/As and Z/28s and the later T/As (later Camaros were woefully under-powered), 11 second 1/4 miles and 200 MPH capable should do the "trick"! The big block Camaros are beasts in a straight line. So are some of the earlier 'birds. The '69 Firebird 400 is an awesome car! (yes, I own one...) I used to have a '73 T/A. It would out-handle pretty much anything I encountered in the mid '80s.

NOTE: I didn't mean the factory produced cars that would go 11s and/or 200 MPH. I meant the 2nd gen F-body is capable of supporting such performance. We have a couple out there (Firebirds) with big Pontiacs in them, that can and DO do such performance. Okay, 200 may be a little bit of a stretch... But 180 isn't! Been there, done that!

I have not owned a Camaro, but I see nothing wrong with them. Just a cheaper version of Firebird. Kinda like the difference between GTO and Chevelle SS from olden times. One of our guys goes 10.40 all weekend on 93 octane, no adders and a relatively stock suspension. 461 CID.

I can understand some people what educated about both cars. but all the ones that i run across always say " nice camaro you got, im like no its a trans am.....and they say same thing" sorry but anybody that owns a trans am doesnt want to be considered as bein "the same" as a camaro. Check it..... my girlfriend cracked the front bumper, so i bought a 95 trans am with a 98 firebird front end. everything i needed. so im turning my firebird into a trans am kinda looking car. front and rear bumper of the trans am, but i still need to look for the side skirts.

and i tell this to other people, and they say..."isnt it the same, whats the difference..." i guess they dont see it, but its frustating and im tired of explaining.

lol its funny that I read this because Yesterday morning I was pulling into the National guard armory and this guy on a cellphone rear ended me totalled my 92 maro and when emergeny crews showed up they looked at the smashed rear end of my car they looked at me and said thats either a wrecked camaro or a new T/A of course i found no humor in this as I was mourning the death of the car that got me laid and kept me safe and by safe i mean this guy hit me going 45mph and i had no seatbelt on and come out of that with a small knot on my head from headbutting the steering wheel. everyone said im lucky to be alive but honestly w/o my camaro life isnt that great anyways.:disappoin

I went to AutoZone to buy a spark plug wire puller. so I grab them and go to pay for them so the guy rings it up and looks at and he like what’s that for... so I look at him with this kind of face:screwy::disappoin:shakehead so I tell him it is to pull the spark plug wires...
and the box it was in says it in big red bold letters SPARK PULG WIRE PULLER, with a solid black background.

Ya alot of people in arkansas is like that. They always call it a camaro. I can tell the difference from 100 feet away by the tail lights or the headlights. I dont know how people can get confused over that.

Camaro is the original, so it's special that way. But Pontiac GTOs were the GM to have (next to vette, of course) before the Camaro. IMHO, the Pontiacs have always been a step up, the Chevy is a great car, but it's made for the masses.

Never really went for the Firebirds myself, cept during the mid 70's. A big block manual trans Trans Am would be awesome.

I went to auto zone tonight for a replacement flasher to get my firebirds blinkers working again. After not finding one on the shelf for less than $12.99 i went to the counter to see if maybe i missed the cheaper one by chance. The guy behind the counter asked if he could help me, and i handed him the bad flasher. He looked at it and said "whats this a PVC valve?" I stuck my hand out for him to give it back to me. He handed it back and i walked straight out the door without another word. This is a very common part, all older GM cars have one thats similar if not exact...

I wanted to say "thats the stupidest thing ive ever heard. Not only is it PCV valve not PVC, but how in the hell can you even mistake the two?"

I have a '79fb. It is always fun going to the parts store when your car is not stock and you try to get something that does not fit their little lookup doohickey. Thank god of online part lookup for some stores. Even though they still get confused sometimes when i hand them the paper and say just get me 2 of these right here!!! And of course "Is that a camaro?"

I agree, because i knew nothing about cars until my friend Iroczman taught me as much as he could. but it is irritating when people memorize #s and names (when they have no idea how it works) trying to sound cool but it makes them look desprate.
