I have a 93 Cutlass Supreme S. My AC makes cold air (so I'm thinking compressor is fine), but it doesnt have enough fan power to cool down the car. I'm not sure if it is a mechanical issue or an electrical one as it has the Electronic Climate Control which sometimes seems to have a mind of its own.

As of a few weeks ago, there is considerably lower output from the fan. Here's the really weird part - it doesn't blow at all unless you are traveling above 45 mph. When you stop at a light there is no air movement. Also, if you turn the fan speed all the way to high, it stops blowing completely, and lower fan settings (2-3 "bars") seem to put out more air than higher settings.

I have checked all the fuses and they are ok.

Any ideas?

Might be a problem of paper from glove box being sucked into fan (problem with my 95 Cutlass Supreme). Check my earlier post re problems and solution.

Very interesting. I will try that. Thanks.

Well John, that wasn't it. I didn't think it would be since there was no noise of anything hitting the blades as you had, but it was a good idea to check. The weirdest thing for me is that it seems to be dependant on my speed. Once I get above 45-50 mph or so, it seems to work somewhat (thought not as it should). Anything less than that and there is very little if any air movement.

the high speeds could be just air from outside being forced in. Maybe the fan itself isnt working right. Do you hear any noises from it at all? Probably would't hurt to take a look and see if its even turning on. You might want to unplug it and see if theres power going to the plug, if there is then u know the fan is out. If there is no power at the plug when the fan should be on then its something else. loose connection or climate control issues.

you need a blower motor resistor. ask for that part. its cheap. you'll find it in the immediate area of the blower motor, likely under the dash by the firewall on the passenger side. this is a real cheap part, like under thirty bucks if you go to advance or part source, whatever country your in.

I'm in the US. Should be an easy part to get. What does it do?

its simple... on high, your blower gets full voltage, but on low and medium for example, the current passes through resistance before getting to the motor... so its just a block of resistors that limit voltage and ther-by limit motor speed.

I am also having a weid issue...think about this... when you ac is blowing at 45 mph, is your climate control in the recirculate position? if so air flow of the exterior will not increase with speed , that would only happen if in fresh air position.. the ac and heat are controlled by rtds sensing indoor and outdoor conditions and the calling for heat / ac the variation of setpoint will cause fan speed changes. these rtds (thermocouples) are wired into the ecu, and I believe the ecu makes the final adjust to fan speed and or cool/heat all based on your desired temp setpoint????? any care to ad lib please do my problem if you watch the outdoor temp you will note dramatic changes therefore, it cools on high one min and then suddenly the heat is on? does anyone know where these RTDS are located, is it a bad ecu or...........

The Cutlass Supreme with the digital climate control does not use the blower resistors. It uses a blower controller which is more complex. The resistor only has the 4 settings, but the controller allows the finer adjustment (is it 8 setting for the digital? My Cutlass Supreme is off the road right now, so I can't check). I converted my car from the base to the digital and had to get the newer controller.

First of all, does the fan work at all? Can you hear it on the low fan speeds? When you put it on the high speeds do you hear it running? Or does it go quiet?

Pull the underdash cover and pull the connectors on the blower motor. There should be 2 of them. Make sure the ground (BLACK WIRE) is grounded, and the power (RED WIRE) is hot when the key is on (12-14 volts). The PURPLE WIRE is the signal wire from the blower controller module.

You have have power and ground, I would say check out the blower controller.

Last thing to remember is that the DIGITAL AC CONTROL HEAD UNIT GOES BAD!!!!! I had a bad one when I first did the conversion, and the AC pretty much had a mind of it's own. I could not control the fan speed or temp setting, or vent poistion at all.

IF you want to get a new blower controller, I think they are about $80-100 from the dealer. I couldn't get one from the parts store because they kept trying to sell me the resistor module.

The resistor module has like 4 wires, and is kinda small, but the blower controller is longer, heavier, and has a massive heat sink on the end of it.

If I can find my camera, I will take some pics of where it is mounted while I have the dash out of the car. If I can find my camera, I am going to go work on the car tonight anyways.
