98 S10 Engages 4x4 By Itself, with no change on dashboard lights

Greetings,

Usually a 4x4 problem is that it doesn't work.
Mine, on the other hand, likes to work too much.

The 4x4 will engage by itself at speeds over 45mph.
Dashboard indicator light for 2-Hi remains lit. Pull over,
switch from 2-Hi to 4-Lo or 4-Hi, and then back to 2-Hi,
and it returns to it's normal self until the next instance.

This is a 98 S-10 LS, with 105k on the odo.

A) Any ideas on what would cause this

B) When it switches by itself, why do the lights stay on 2-Hi
with no flashing, etc.

C) I'm thinking there's a way to disconnect 4x4 switches, but
this may be a waste of time, since it seems to do it without
any help from the switches themselves.

MT-2500, I read THIS POST (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=711873) and was wondering if this might be something similar?

Hmmmmm............

Yes it could be.
To bad the poster did not follow up and let us know how it went.
What transfer case do you have?
If the one with auto on push buttons.
I would get a good transmission/transfer case scanner on it and run the shifting test and check for code.

When it drops in 4W does it make any noise or does 4W light comes on?
Or how do you know when it drops into 4W?

If the one with auto on push buttons.
Yes, it's the 3-button option one.

When it drops in 4W does it make any noise or does 4W light comes on?
You can hear it trying to engage, but it can't
because it's spinning too fast. After I come to
a complete stop, I don't think it fully finishes engaging.

The 4W light does not come on (2W stays lit).
Pushing buttons will change light sequence, and then
you can hear it "ka-chink" into 4W, and then back
to 2W once pushed again.

Low speeds around town will not cause it to do it.
Only above 45.

If a 233 transfer cas e jumper pin 13 and ground on your diagnostic connector.
Check for codes and post back any codes.

Also if no codes and the lights on push buttons are working normal I would check the vacuum or electrical switch set up that engages front axle.
Good luck.

This is exactly my problem. 1996 with 168,000 miles. Replaced the Transfer case switch. Solved some of the problem. Tomorrow I will investigate the vacuum line and the vacuum switch under the battery. Any additional help Would be appreciated.

thanks VMI 07
