1990 E350 460 Head Removal

Hello,

I have a 1990 E350 with a 460 7.5L. I think I've lost a head gasket - I'm blowing allot of white smoke out of the exhaust as all speeds and the engine will barely idle. My kids think it's a fog machine :frown:

Has anyone attempted to pull both cylinder heads while still in the van (actually it's a Class C motor home built on a Ford E350 chassis)?

I looks really tight and even if I can get the head out I'm sure if I'll be able to torque the new heads properly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I posted this message to two forums and received no replies. So I still don't know if it is possible to remove the heads while leaving the engine in place.

I did have one shop quote $2000.00 to pull the heads, rebuild and reinstall. They said they were going to TRY to do this without removing the engine. I did not have much confidence in the final result after speaking with them.

I decided to bite the bullet and go with a Ford remanufactured engine. They offered a 3 year - 75,000 mile warranty on parts AND labor.

The cost right around $6,000.00. I also decided to replace a couple of parts (ex. alternator) now since they would be a pain to replace when the engine is back in place.

I priced a Jasper remanufactured engine with a local shop doing the work. Surprisingly the price was the same. However, the warranty on parts was 3 years - 75,000 miles but they would only offer 1 year on the labor.

Years ago I would have attempted to do the engine myself. But I'm too busy with work, I live in a community with a home owners association and the place where I keep the motor home will not allow me to do this type work.

I hope to have the motor home back Tuesday or Wednesday of this week (July 24th or 25th).
