Does anyone know how to fit a 194/168 bulb into a 2040 socket???

I have a '93 Merc. Sable and want to replace the 2040 bulbs with either LEDs or something else, but they don't make them for 2040 bulbs.

Is it okay to shave off just a bit of the bulb wedge to make it fit? Will i have wattage problems or any others?
