does the year have any 'bearing' on the type of bearings

friend has a block for a thunderbird coupe (ford 2.3L) and machine shop says to use .010" main and rod bearings...when lookin for this we were faced with q's like, what year tbird motor...(the idiot doesnt know) but should the year matter, he's guessing 88, but what if its an 89 or 86, shouldnt they all be the same????????
