A nice budget setup would be..... For the crank, go with the Eagle Crank (4.00") Mahle -12 cc dished pistons Scat H-beams All ARP bolts/studs Big cam......cam choice all depends on what you want to do with truck as a whole(race, play, forced induction, nitrous, all motor, etc) Also, you'll need a good set of heads(never cheap). The stock intake will choke down a 408, so you'll also be wanting to upgrade it to make use of the newfound power from 3000-6700rpms. A good choice is the ls6 intake due to price and fairly easy installation. The motor is going to have to be bored .30 for the 408. Keep the crank at a 4" so you won't have to do any clearancing. Now you can do a 402 setup just by going to the 4" stroke without any engine machining. SLP sells this type setup including a 6.0L block. It's not an lq9 motor, but not really necessary anyways since you'll be changing everything out(hopefully) sc_customs 06-05-2007, 05:21 AM lol slowprocess... if i fly you out to CA will you make my 4.8L scream for me?? you seem to know a thing or two about building a beast of a motor :evillol: Slowprocess 06-05-2007, 01:06 PM lol slowprocess... if i fly you out to CA will you make my 4.8L scream for me?? you seem to know a thing or two about building a beast of a motor :evillol: Man, yeah :grinyes: Right now the guy that built my last tranny has an extended cab 4.8L running 13.80s with cam/bolt ons/tune/trailblazer converter/gears. Cam selection is key on a 4.8L build. sc_customs 06-05-2007, 04:41 PM I'm actually in the market for a cam right now, but I can't make up my mind as to what I need. I've looked online at performancetrucks.net to try to get some info on what would be the best cam for my setup. Right now I've got a 4.8L RCSB with stock internals, bolt-ons, stock trans, 3.73 w/ eaton posi. Lookin to get a wheatley tune over my superchips I have now. Any suggestions on a good cam? The guy that cut the cam for that extended cab, as well as cutting a cam for my new setup is from vmaxmotorsports. You should give him a call. He doesn't like to post up his cam specs online, because he's getting numbers no one else is at the time, but he'll ask you a million questions about your setup, what you want to do, etc. Then he'll recommend a cam to you and it will be exactly what you need. Check out his website and give him a call. sinfull90 06-06-2007, 07:36 PM is it a good idea to keep the cam and head manufacturers the same? i was looking at some Trick Flow heads and they make cams as well... just thinking the two would go better together than getting another company's cam in there. Not necessarily......I've had no experiences with trick flows cams, but know several people running their heads and love them. Your cam/heads selection is going to be based solely off of what you want to do with the truck. A 408 likes a big lopey cam, which isn't always convenient for everyday driving(especially on transmissions with high rpm stalls). I guess my main question is,"How fast do you want to go?" Have you considered a good 6.0L setup at first, then maybe upgrading to a 408 in the future? I've put several thousand everyday miles on my 6.0L setup, and it has run mid 11s. It will go low 11s before the year is up. Just curious as to how fast you want to go and if you want to drive it every day. sinfull90 06-09-2007, 10:44 AM it's not really about the speed for me... my truck is a 4x4 so i'm lookin more at stump pulling power with the occasional light to light race in town and maybe a couple runs down the 1/4 mile just to show off. the lq9 i have in it now does great... but i think i've gone mad with power and the never ending quest for more. i do drive the truck everyday and sometimes she gets to come up to work with me which is a long drive of about 600Km. the final product will have a 8.5" rock krawler desert race kit in it and i would like to race the baja 500 in it. i guess i keep answering the question of how fast you want to go with race (now 3 times) in the last sentence, but this is a long term goal as the lift alone is close to 10 large. for now the motor will get some money and then the lift. imagine a 408 in a SB RC!
