So i'm driving down the street and this amazing RX-7 is right along side me. He's done a great job on the exhaust and it sounds amazing. I pull up next to him and ask if it's a turbo. He says yes and I just smile. He reved up his engine and let it blow off. I knew that if I even tried he would kill me. My question is should I have tried?

That would really depend on what type of mood I would be in at the moment...
I have to say, sometimes it's fun to mess around with cars that are without a question faster than you are yourself...
I once saw a C6 Z06 sitting at a red light, it was around 2:00AM... So since the streets were open with not a car in sight, I decided to get next to him, and rev'd it...
Light goes green and I watched him get sideways and just BOLT... I had a blast, because the vette sounded amazing... :banghead:

Yeah I don't really care if I would lose or not, I just enjoy seeing nice cars take off fast. :p

If I know I stand no chance I wont bother racing him/her. It makes you look like a ricer when your outclassed and refuse to admit it. Im sure other drivers dont like to be belittled either. Like I had a guy in a Prelude Si come up to me last night and rev at a light. Im thinking "yeah right you fucking ricer!" I mean learn your place.
If you wanna see a car go fast ask the driver. Ive been next to Murchielagos and Carrera GTs and I just roll down the window and ask them if they would mind launching it or whatever. most of the time they do it, sometimes its a rental and they dont wanna risk wrecking it.

You hit the nail on the head! Guess that means I'm not a ricer! But I did enjoy his nice car!

I can see this point of view to an extent. I certainly don't go looking for LS*'s and try and race nor anything like it. But certain cars that I just like seeing take off I don't see much of a problem. One of my buddies got a little race in with one of the guys across the street who owns a F430. Of course his GT Mustang got destroyed but the guy had no problem having a little fun with him.

Yea you can look like a ricer, but still, people like to see fast cars gun it. That's not a ricer attitude, thats just someone who respects fast cars getting on it. Do I think my *insert shitty car here* can keep up with whatever it is? Hell no. Does that mean I dont want to see them kick my ass. Hell no.

The last time that happened I was in the old GTC on the way home from work. For some odd reason a 911 Turbo decided he wanted to have a go at it on the freeway. I got up next to him and simply yelled that I wasn't worth the fuel.

i'd have done it. i at least like to see where my car stands against others even if you know they're are faster. as long as you don't act like a dick after you lose i say go for it.

Go for it, and when he wins, give him a huge grin and a big thumbs up.

Guess I just have to swalow my pride then. I really would have liked a chance to race the guy just to see how my car would hold up to his, but I generally only get into races that I know I can win! Which dosen't happen too often....

Racing is fun. Whether or not you win, somebody worth conjuring up the words to initiate a conversation with will respect the fact that you enjoy racing as well. I race anybody who shows interest as long as they aren't an asshat in doing so. Usually after we race, I invite them out to our local car meet. The more car enthusiasts you promote through all types of racing, the more we have a reason to persuade society to accept racing and motorsports activities, thus promoting the construction of more sanctioned places to enjoy such in a legal environment.

If he thinks you're a ricer for just having fun, then fuck him. He isn't a true car enthusiast and probably didn't turn a single wrench on that car.

Its about having fun with motor vehicles.

there's a journey that I do quite often on a relatively new road so there aren't any speed cameras there yet(for those interested; it's the A13 extension towards Lakeside).
On one fine day, I was doing my usual 100-105 in my little Yaris when I see a pair of headlights crossing into the lane behind me.
I pull over when I have the chance. When I pull over, I notice another pair of headlights pull out into the space I left.
I then watched an M3 and a Carrera 4 blat into the distance.

I don't really pay this much attention until half a minute later, I catch up, them having been held up by some traffic.
The three of us then proceed to clear ourselves a nice path
(ok.. they cleared a path for me) until the road was clear ahead of us again.

I don't think any of us went under 100 once the road clearing began.
Didn't see the guy in the M3 but the Porsche gave me a thumbs up and a wave before shooting off into the distance again.

Almost the same thing happened when I wa driving my sister's Ford KA.
I was doing my usual and another M3 pulled over to let me pass.
Obviously he wasn't paying much attention to what car it was but what ever he was thinking, the moment he let me pass, he pulled out again and began to get closer...
Something about being passed by a car that has 250+ less BHP than yours does things to a person.
Anyway, I let him re-pass and he gave me the funniest "wtf?" look as he passed.
The two of us then carried on going at more or less the same speed until I turned off.

Moral 1: not all M3 drivers in Essex are arses
Moral 2: don't be a dick
Moral 3: sometimes, it's fun to play with cars that cost 4 times yours and has near enough 5x your BHP.

Awesome story, and I noticed something about your first Moral. I hear alot that many E46 M3 drivers are total fucks, and they are real stuck up. I've met more than my fair share in the past few weeks, and they have all been really cool, really up to just chatting about thier cars and such. I've been lucky enough to not bump into any M3 owners that are dicks. However, I've had to deal with two M6 owners that have been total d-bags.

Also noticed something in chatting with these guys. None of the six speed drivers have said anything bad about the SMG, and vice versa applies as well. They all just say that they simply prefered one tranny over the other. Interesting, it seems on my end, the only people making a big deal over automated clutch gear boxes in a BMW/Audi/VW/Lambo/Ferrari/what have you are people who don't own them.

But I agree, sometimes it just fun to play around with a car that is much faster. Hell, a few days back, I was playing around with a nicely done 350Z the other day. I knew once we both got on it, he would blow me away, and he knew it too, but the road we were on offered a nice chance to shake and bake in some light traffic, and right before he left me in the dust, he looked over and gave me a thumbs up and a smile. Its always nice running into a guy like that. Or, in drunken monkey's case, some dude in a Porsche willing to give the thumbs up to a guy in a Yaris.

I agree completely. I miss the days when you were a ricer for your punk ass attitude, primered body kit, underglow and a wing. Now it seems according to some a majority of people on AF are ricers. w00t!
