Disabling Alarm Altogether?

Ok, I have a used 2000 VW New Beetle 2.0 5 spd which did NOT come with a keyless remote, but which shows in the handbook that it should have one. However, I'm sure that's generic and does not mean it did. But, the dealer did say they could sell us one for $100 and program it for $55 after charging us $100 diagnostic to discover why the key won't disarm the alarm sometimes and they charge $100 per hour. In the threads I've noted that it is probably the door latch (I was able to disarm it once by pushing slightly on the door, so that's probably it) and that it'll cost $160 + to take care of that. So, I've done my homework and searched all the threads here in AF. Now, all that being said, IS there a way to simply turn off the alarm altogether if I don't want to go through all the expense of the above? Someone told me the dealer could go into the fuse box under the hood and completely disable the alarm. IF they could do that, heaven knows what they'd charge to lift the hood and do that. Any suggestions? I realize I may have to just break down and go to the dealer. I noticed there are a lot of keyless remotes being sold on Ebay. But they said to look on the BACK of my current keyless remote to see if the numbers matched. Duh...what if you don't have one! Geesh! Ok...long enough message. Sorry about that...any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Cant disable the factory alarm.

The remote that fits your car is the square remote with a round hump where the lock button is not a square hump. I dont remember the part number also.

Thank you for your response. Is this picture representative of the remote?

Thanks for the response. As it happens, I didn't purchase it, for that very reason. In fact, we've pretty much decided that rather than pay 50+ on Ebay, and take a chance that it can't be programed, we're going to purchase from the dealer for $100. The problem is we've discovered that my key does NOT open the trunk, nor lock the glove box (it must take a very different key). I believe whoever had our vehicle before us did not have the original key and maybe had a new ignition put on, as well as a matching door lock. Who knows. But it wasn't worth taking that chance.

So, we think it may be the latch assembly as mentioned before, so we'll replace it if needed and have a remote keyed and programed for my car.

Thanks!

I had the same issue with my 2000 vw Beetle, the alarm would not disable. After trying a number of suggestions I disconnected the battery and waited about 30 seconds. After reconnecting the battery, the alarm was no longer activated and the blinking light next to the driver's side door lock had stopped blinking. I was now able to start the car without an alarm activation. :naughty:
