I have a 99 Grand Prix SE that has the "Check Engine Light" on. I took it in so I could see why and was told that its the MAF.

I will be honest, I am not mechanically inclined and don't really like to do that type of work, but my friend said that it isn't very hard to replace the MAF. Is this true? And if so, is there anything I need to look for or be aware of besides just taking the old one off and replacing it with a new one? I am in a little bit of a financial bind right now so I can't afford to take it in, but this month I have to get the inspection...so it NEEDS to be fixed.

It would help to post whether you have a 3100 or 3800 engine since the MAFs are different and so is the replacement process.

It has the 3800 engine series.

To replace MAF on a SII 3800 it is a 10 minute or less job. Two Torx 20 safety screws hold it onto the throttle body. So you will need the special Torx safety allen wrench tool to remove it. One electrical connector. It is recommended to use a OEM GM MAF and not aftermarket.

Hopefully this fixes the problem. I searched previously on this forum and apperently others have had the same symptoms as mine. (car starting, but wanting to turn off, sometimes having hesitation when accelerating, and hard shifting on ocasions)

I was browsing the online catalog at Oreilly's Auto and Granatelli keeps showing up. WOuld that be suffiicient?

The Granatelli is an aftermarket hi-performance MAF and not recommended unless you have a re-programmed PCM module and it requires extensive mods at the intake ducting to install it.

Ohh ok...thank you for clearing that up. (You can really tell that I am not much of a mechanic...haha!:lol: )

About the obd-ii code....I dont remember it anymore, but the guy looked it up and said it was the MAF sensor. I will try to look for it tonight.

Thank you for the website you suggested. Have you dealt with them before? Are they reputable? If by any chance the wrong part is sent, do they accept returns?

I have done business with ZZP for several years as alot of us on the forum have. They specialize in Grand Prix. You'll probably get the right one the first time but they have a good return policy especially if they make the mistake.
