Is it like a grinding sound that's constant in pitch and you can hear real good at lower speeds? If so, likely axle bearings or axle shafts are the culprit. If it's a whine that varies in pitch, corresponding with vehicle speed, that would indicate a gear mesh issue - i.e. wear or incorrect mesh/lash. If it's a clunk when you put it in gear, that could indicate wear in either the pinion/pinion bearing or U-joint.

it is a growling noise at low speed.....and the only time i get a whine is when i slow down....i guess either way i need to rebuild my rear axle anyways

Yep, sounds like axle bearings.
