Ignition Module or could it be something else?

Re: Oldsmobile Delta 88, 1988. V6 3.8L FWD automatic. 212k miles.
I drove about 5 miles to a store and after 15 minutes shopping the car would not start. Have good 1000 Amps battery. It was cranking well. I had it towed home and tried to troubleshoot without luck. In the evening I connected the battery charger just to make sure it would crank in the morning to continue troubleshooting. To my surprise in the morning it started right away but the engine run rough. I checked ignition sparking and found the coil for cylinder 3 and 6 was very weak. There was a crack and some wax like material leaking out of it. I bought new ignition coils (set of 3 coils as one part) and replaced it. It did not fix it! Still the same coil for cylinder 3 and 6 is not firing or has just a weak spark. Engine starts easily all the time, but runs on 4 cylinders only. I checked engine codes and none was set. The Service Engine Soon light does not come on. :banghead: The question is: Is the problem bad ignition module or could it be something else? Could it be a bad sensor or what else could be causing this? Thanks for qualified answers. :frown:

No way to diagnose this in this environment . A weak signal from the crank sensor could cause this as well as the icm, Napa and AZ will test it for you, but that is not always conclusive.

Thank you for the response. Napa and Autozone don't test anymore at least here in California.

No way to diagnose this in this environment . A weak signal from the crank sensor could cause this as well as the icm, Napa and AZ will test it for you, but that is not always conclusive.
If it was crankshaft sensor I would assume that it would set an engine code and the service engine light would come on. Plus the sensor would have to have multiple signals, I am not sure if it does. What you mean by "icm"?

Ignition control module, no code would be set on a 88 car for the cps.

did you check the wire harness for continuity? it only takes one bad little section...
also try putting in new plugs and wires. that sometimes does the trick
as for the checking of the codes, if it is less than 1992 (i believe) then all you need to check them yourself is a paperclip. if you need help with this, google can tell you also, or there were a lot of the old threads dealing with the paperclip trick
