96 blazer having a problem starting. Sometimes the "check engine" and "brake" lights flash alternately and it will turn over but won't run. Other times, the lights do not flash and it will start right up. the "check engine" light doesn't always come on at start-up either. I've hooked it up to a scanner while the lights are flashing, and they immediately stop flashing and it will start right up. Any suggestions?

Dear Newbie, I think you have the exact problem I had with my 96 Blazer. Youre not going to believe this but its probably just a Loose Electrical Plug.
But which one eh? Here's the Fix.
First confirm your problem. When the car won't start you should notice 2 problems right away
1. You should notice that the fuel pump isn't buzzing for 2 seconds when you turn the key on without starting your engine.
2. You should notice that the "check engine" light doesn't come on at all. You should notice that the other lights ARE coming on. But for some reason that you don't know, the Check Engine Light IS NOT on.

If this is the case then more than likely its just a loose plug.
Prop open hood.
Leave the Key in the Ignition. Turn the Key on.
You should see the lights on the Dash come ON, but NO Check Engine Light.
Now leave the key ON just like that.
Run over to your Engine.
You see the Black Brake Booster on the firewell.
On top of the Brake Booster you'll see 2 big black bundles of wire Covered with a plastic Cover.
Before anything else... with your hand just wiggle these black bundles. Most like by the passenger side of the Brake Booster.
Be very quiet and listen .... did you hear you fuel pump all of a sudden buzzzz for 2 seconds.
Check the Dash ... is the Check Engine Light on now ???
If it is you found your problem !

If it is lets fix it....
You will need some electrical contact cleaner, silicone spray and 2 long tie straps. Pliers, screwdriver.

Turn your ignition key OFF. We don't want to short anything out!
From the Brake Booster follow the Black Bundle of wire along the Firewall to the passenger side.
You should see that the bundle is held up to the firewall with a Metal Clamp and Bolt.
Remove Clamp and Bolt and throw it away or save it in your garage for something else.
It's not needed and its creating the Black Bundle too much stress on the Wire Connector.
NOW ...
Pop open the Plastic Cover Above the Brake Booster.
You will need maybe some pliers for this and some silicone spray.
Be careful no to break the plastic tabs.
Once it's open you'll see that there are 2 connectors in there.
Your main concern is the bigger one.
Its kind of Rectangular Shaper.
Unplug it. Clean it up with Electrical Contact Cleaner and some cloth.
Lube it ALL up with some Silcone spray and snap it back together really tight.
Use 2 Tie Straps to make one long tie strap. Now use that big Tie strap and strap it around on only one side of the connector.
Use the side of the connector that has kind of a lip/bump to it. That way it can't come off. Use a pair of pliers and pull it nice and tight. Your done with that connector.
As for the second connector it's probably fine but while your in there you should at least unplug it, clean it, lube it, and plug it in again.
Once both plugs are taken care off
Put them back in its place and close cover. Throw some silicone spray on cover. It will snap close alot easier.
Once its close clean it up nice and neat with silicone spray and wipe it with a clean cloth.
Remember that while your doing all of this to be very careful with these wires! Handle with Care!
Car should start fine now.
Remember that ... !
With the Key ON "always" check 2 things before you start your car.
1. Wait to see if the fuel pump comes on 2 seconds
2. Check Engine light should be ON.

Enjoy !!!
