Need some help! The tape player isn't working! We've tried using audio tapes, and all we get is a clicking sound all the way through! Note: Radio works just fine!:banghead:

Where do you hear the clicking noise? The tape player or the speakers?

Have you tried using a tape haed cleaner? It looks just like a tape which instead of metallic film it has a cloth material that absorbs alcohol to clean the head. The head normally reads the magnetic data on the film of a tape. If this becomes dirty, it can fail to pick up the magnetic qualities of the film. Usually they don't get dirty enough to not work at all, but it's worth a shot.

The other failure is if the head isn't engaging the film (usually the head presses down into the tape).

The clicking noise you are probably hearing (if it is from the tape player) is probably the normal sound of the gears rotating the reel of the tape. If you do try to play a tape, are the reels being turned? You can tell by putting a rewound tape in and seeing if any film goes onto the empty reel.

You may wind up having to replace the head-unit (the radio itself). You can either have a factory one put back in, or have an aftermarket CD player put in.

Also inspect the exposed part of the film when you take the tape out, see if it has any signs of being stretched (which can happen if one reel is trying to turn while the other is stuck).

#1: The clicking is in the tape player and is not a fast, but almost 3/4 to a second apart--click,click,click! Then on the view screen there is some indication where it shows a crawl going accross while the tape is turning, have marked the tape but it does not move! Also, like was mentioned, the radio itself is working just fine, but it's just the cassette player we're having trouble with! Have tried the tape cleaner, but that didn't seem to work! Can't eject tape unless we shut off ignition, and push stop! Will not eject otherwise! Player receives tape correctly, but unless the engine is shut off completely, then we can push stop button to eject tape! So, we won't be able to change tapes even if we wanted to! In case we do have to replace this with a CD player, what would you recommend?

It sounds like there's a lot of mechanical problems inside the tape player if it won't even eject the tape without the power being off. It's probably getting stuck while attempting to engage the head. I would just replace the whole unit.

If you put a cd player in; Alpine are pretty reliable. JVC and Pioneer are pretty good. Sony MAY be good, but Sony doesn't make a reliable laser anymore. In about a year there's a good chance the sony laser will die. If you go with one of the first 3 brands I mentioned, you should enjoy it a lot :)

You shouldn't have to replace any speakers. New speakers will sound better, but if you're not concerned about increasing quality and you just want a functioning player, it will work fine. Unless one or more of your speakers are blown, but if you say the radio was working fine, you would have noticed a blown speaker.

The CD Players also have the radio built into them, so you may wind up with two radios, and the antenna hooked up to one of them. You can also buy an aftermarket tape player if you have everything on tape.

If you go to www.crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com) and click "outfit my car" you can put in the info for your car, and it will give you head-units that fit. When they send you the head unit, they give you everything you need (including specific instructions for your car) to replace it yourself (except the tools like screwdrivers and such). Generally they are pretty easy to do. They call the head-units "recievers" in case you have trouble finding them, just another synonym. Or you can go to a store like Best Buy or Circuit City and buy one there and have them do it.
