Just called the place I normally get my routine things done at. I told them I want Royal Purple tranny fluid and they said I'm the only one they know that runs Royal Purple ANYTHING because most people aren't too concerned about their oil. Because of this, he didn't know whether or not the Royal Purple is able to mix with my stock tranny fluid now...

So he proposed the following:

1) Just add new tranny fluid of the same type my car uses, and replace filter and gasket or whatever, or
2) which is complete tranny flush then add royal purple.

Now here's the thing! I know most of you say tranny flush = grand am tranny death, so I didn't know what to do. My question is this: CAN the royal purple mix with the dexcool or whatever the tranny fluid is now, or do I need a flush? What did you do, Gir? And how's it runnin? I obviously don't want to blow up my transmission doing something stupid...

the quicker the response, the quicker I can purchase the tranny fluid and get my car roxxoring :D

First off Dexcool is anitfreexe
Hope thats not in you trany :yikes:

Anyway all synthetics will mix just fine with normal fluids.

Though If this is your first trans fluid & filter change,
I'd just go with a good high quality trans fluids.

Then in about 10-20k miles, change them again then put in the synthetic royal purple or what ever.
This way the old gets double diluted before you add the expensive synthetic.

My SE & GT both are using Castrol Syntec Dexron trans fluid and Castrol Syntec 10w-30 oil.
As of Saturday :)
Been looking for thier new high performance brake fluid too.

I'd also Stay away from the flushing of the trans.
That usually ends in bad news, and an empty wallet. :(

I would do the double change thing but I'm gonna be broke enough after the first one :( Maybe I will tho... we'll see :)

So I'll have royal purple oil and trans fluid!

Now all I need is good brake fluid. Maybe. Dunno how my brake fluid levels are.

yea, simple filter change will do

to change the filter, the fluid has to be drained... so all that old junk will come out. I did just a switch to synthetic (Royal Purple Max ATF)... I think about 8qt or something... I dont know the amount. XI knows...

because also there is stuff in the tq convertor that prob wont come out the first time, thus doing another fluid service like XI just said...

When I did mine, it rode funky for a while, I just didnt run it hard and did smooth shifting... it cleared and its amazing.... trans temp stays down too which is nice...

Yes saturday my GT wasnt moving at all in D.
Had to shift around then into 1st to get it going from a light. This was all the sudden no warnings.
Right before that, I actually did leave about a 50ft black marks, maybe that did it in

Anyway changed the F&F that night and it is doing ok now and no more codes!!
Which this was the second time I changed the F&F.
When I bought the car a year ago, about 8k miles I changed it.

Realy surprised the SE has held up as long as it has :grinyes:

It isn't me, I swear! :uhoh:

I'm actually just looking at both places :p I'm asking in both places to get 2nd/3rd/4th opinions :D Always a good idea before investing thousands of dollars lol. Don't worry I wont abandon you guys!!! Most of them are usually asses there anyway so I like here better :) I don't know what I'm gonna do yet so I'm just weighing my options!

I probably SHOULD do the headers first... cheaper anyway and Ic an back out on a several thousand dollar investment easier :naughty:

I don't want to pay to have them installed tho lol... wonder if any of my friends can help with the install :p

Otherwise, pay to play :(

installing headers suck on transverse mounted engines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best to do them when the top of the engine is off, iintake & heads.

If you do the headers your self, better invest in gloves, and lots of spray lube.
Plan on breaking a few bolt heads off too.... that back ones a b***h :disappoin

same as here. I haven't really made up my mind as to what I'm doing. I change my mind about 20 times a day lol. Just learning right now :)

Also considering doing body work. Maybe getting headers/high-flo cat and PCM, then getting body work done so I don't rust out. But that would kinda ruin the sleeper look :p

My dad REALLY wants me to get a paint job and body work done, and isn't AS excited about the engine stuff. Granted he has no real say in what I do for sure, but he might help me out more if I do what he'd like more... and I can use all the help I can get

Well paint doesnt make it go any faster :grinno:
Plus body stuff takes longer....

I was going to get a DHP but I think the GT is going to get the same as my SE Pcm.
With the DHP or a HP you realy need thier tuners , plus you are limited on what peramiters you can manipulate/change with both.
Mine is open ended, so I can change anything :D

btw - I wouldnt put off the trans fluid & filter change to long , once it starts getting hotter outside your trans will be cookin.

Yeah it's not having any problems... I just needed headlights first. Headlights more important at the moment cause I need to be able to see at night, and my transmission isn't in any imminant danger yet :)

Silverstar ULTRAS!!! Gonna blind people lol :evillol:

I will say this about the GA automatic trans, service it before it starts crapping out!

If you look in the manual that came with the car it recomends at 50k miles if your car has had the S**T ran out of it.
ASE says annually.
So the gritty old fluids are removed,
because thats what damamges the clutch faces and can cause overheating, both killing the trans prematurly.

Only thing I want coming prematurly is my paycheck or a vacation

BTW I'm going to post an R&R for the trans fluid & filter change in the Tips & maintenance.
Took a bunch of pics saturday when I did the GT
