well, i got a friend with a 89 camry 4cyl needs the passenger side front cv axle replaced and i was wondering what kinda trouble we're looking to get into by doing this? i've replaced cv axles on my own car (2000 olds alero) which was pretty straight forward and easy, but i don't know japanese cars as much. i know the hub assembly has to come off to do this but are they press in or single unit? i just need some info and anything u can tell me would be appreciated prefferably, is the hub a press in?, the torque value for the hub/axle nut?, and what else i'm gonna have to take apart other then the brakes and hub to get this thing out. again, any info is appreciated on this.
thanks in advance

Everything you need should be in the Factory Service Manuals thread at the top of the forum. Open it, find your model year and you're on your way. On my 87 I don't recall removing the hub. I just removed two bolts connecting the hub/strut assy to the control arm and pushed the axle out of the hub. The axle came out of the hub without a problem but, some have to wack it pretty good to get them to pop loose.

Is the joint clicking or are you just replacing a torn boot?

not really sure, she said someone told her the cv axle is toast and needs to be replaced, basically i'm just along as the "grease-monkey" to get the job done.
and thank you, i looked up top but it was alittle confuseing, i'll try looking again to see what i can find but your info has helped out quite a bit.

thanks again

Probably not the case but, if it was just a torn boot and there wasn't any clicking consider using split boots. No axle change required. You just have to clean the joint thoroughly and repack the grease. Many don't like them because they say you can't clean all the contaminants and repack it with it still on the car. Horsehocky! I've done it 5 times and still have not had one fail 8 years later.
