Hey i am just wondering about this thing i saw online. Performance chip that is supposed to replace the factory installed one and add HP to your car. I was just wondering how safe it is to do so. I saw them on ebay and they are pretty cheap. does anyone have them and what do you think of it.

I'm pretty sure those just rewrite the fuel mix ratios and spark timing formulas. If it does give you more horses, you'll probably lose MPGs and have higher emissions.

And from what I hear, Ebay parts = bad.

it's not where they come from, it's who makes them that's important.

performance chips (good ones) are good for 15-25bhp and can also increase fuel economy at the same time.

they are just a new map of fuelling/timing/etc but that's what engine tuning in is the programming side of performance.

usually, when increasing power you will lose some fuel economy. so don't expect to see a drop in your fuel bills.

the best bet is to go to a performance shop, talk to the people there and then decide what to do. the best option is to buy a blank chip, and have your car on a rolling road, so the chip can be custom flashed for your car and your requirments. this is better than a "generic" performance chip for your car.

Alright thanks a lot, i just saw the chip on ebay, that was only $20 and is supposebly adds 35HP and 1-2 MPG. sounds too good to be true, wouldn't want to destroy my car with some 20 dollar chip. Thanks again.

a decent chip is going to run you closer to $350. add in the cost the custom rolling-road tuning and you're looking at $400-$450.

a $20 chip isn't worth it.
