'93 Roadmaster ABS - $$$$$

My ABS light lit up on the dash. The error code was for the pump/ valve assembly. I checked it out and the motor on the pump wasn't working. It's a sealed unit. Here's the kicker the only ABS hydraulic unit I could find locally was at the BUICK dealer, new for $2,058.00:disappoin . The internet has rebuilts for $657 plus a core charge. I'm the original owner, bought it in Sept. of '92, it has just under 64,000 miles and is almost mint! I went to the junkyard and bought one for $125 +tax. 90 day warranty. I cleaned it up and went to install it, but couldn't get one of the brake lines out of the unit. I'm going to see if I can get a preformed replacement line tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to bend one. It's still cheaper than the two grand for a new unit. I've only replaced a starter, water pump and radiator. as soon as I get the ABS fixed I'm selling it - it's been a fantastic car, but I'm afraid it's going to start costing me more than it's worth.

That's too bad. These are great cars and hold up quite well. If you look back at the track record over the 14 1/2 years you've owned the car you'll soon realize that not a lot went wrong and you didn't spend a lot of money keeping it running. These cars are capable of over 200,000 miles and even if you have to put in$1000 a year, it's still cheaper than buying a new or fairly new car these days, and besides that it's built better and safer.

I ended up heating the brake line fitting with a propane torch for 10 minutes and got it loose with a vise grip. I figured I had nothing to lose by trying to tighten it in the new unit with vise grips. it worked ! T he Junkyard unit works fine. It ended up costing me $149.31 with the brake fluid. I would like to keep the car until it hits 100,000 miles, but we only drive it 2500-3000 mi/yr.
I'd be 93 or dead by then...............:grinyes: :naughty:
