A/C work is one of the jobs best left to the professionals. If its completly empty the leak will need fixed and have a vacuum pulled on the system before recharging. If its just low you wont know how much to put in. If you over charge the system you will kill the compressor. Having someone service it properly is much cheaper then a new compressor.

The recharge kits you get from the stores are commonly called death kits because alot of system are killed from ppl using them and over charging. You need high and low side gauges to properly charge the system.

Yeah, What he said ^^^^ Don't mess with it. I'm a huge DIY'er and I won't touch A/C.
