ByronP 03-29-2007, 02:10 AM The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee can be money pits as well. The grand tends to be a bit more comfortable. The 4.0L while not a rocket, is a good motor and should last a long time. If you're set on a V8 then the Grand is you're only choice. For $5K you should be able to find something nice. I tried the links but they sent me to the home page for the listings. dkitt10 03-29-2007, 09:00 AM well if u feel boredjust goto the homepage there, click alberta edmonton area and seach for any jeep in the 3000-5000 regiont but i understand if u dont want too..hah i prolly wont be getting the v8 cause most i seen were the 6's typically how many miles can u log under one of these motors ByronP 03-29-2007, 11:22 AM The inline 6 seems to run forever. If maintained they will easily go over 200K miles. They do have a problem with the exhaust header though. You will most likely have to replace it sooner or later. On the plus side there are many after market parts so the cost isn't too bad. Of course when changing out an exhaust manifold cost is usually a lower concern than busting off rusty/corroded studs. Then the project can get frustrating. If you've ever done headers before you know what I'm talking about. :-) Checke dout the site. Looks like you have a bunch to choose from. There was a 98 for $3000 that looked pretty nice. Too bad you're not here. There's a 99 for sale next door for $7400 US. It's a little more but it looks pretty nice. Good luck shopping. ByronP wafrederick 03-29-2007, 11:50 AM You can get the manifold welded up,the cracks mainly. The V8 is a gas hog because it is a full time 4wd with the V8. msdz 03-29-2007, 06:10 PM My v8 gets better gas mileage than my mother-in-laws inline 6!!!! I get poor gas mileage around town but on open road I get about 22 MPG. Hers gets about the same in town and 17 MPG highway. diddy0071 04-07-2007, 12:29 AM I used to own a 1997 Blazer, but after wrecking it, I got a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo, and couldn't be any happier with it. If you want something that can take any type of weather, I would have to go with a Grand cherokee. They are more comfortable, and although both the I6 and V8 are gas hogs (mine is I6) they aren't as bad as most trucks. They are very reliable, and the 4x4 is great. jeepgclwj 04-07-2007, 09:12 AM You can get the manifold welded up,the cracks mainly. The V8 is a gas hog because it is a full time 4wd with the V8. Not so fast there, I get 22mpg on the highway and 17 in city driving...I know several Jeep owners with the 4.0 and they are all a little upset that I'm gettin better gas mileage than them and can still get were I'm going alot faster..... V8 FTMFW!!!! msdz 04-07-2007, 03:11 PM Not so fast there, I get 22mpg on the highway and 17 in city driving...I know several Jeep owners with the 4.0 and they are all a little upset that I'm gettin better gas mileage than them and can still get were I'm going alot faster..... V8 FTMFW!!!! Same here, although I get very crappy in town gas mileage. I take my kids to the bus stop and let the vehicle idle, I consider that part of my in town gas mileage. If it wasn't for that I would probably get better MPG's. Also, any vehicle can be made to get better gas mileage, doing some upgrades to air filter, type of oils used, tires(sizes and inflation), and gears in front and rear differentials. If a vehicle has the power to take off with a higher gear ratio than original gears then you will get better gas mileage on the highway, but could sacrafice mileage in a constant stop and go city driving enviroment, since it will take a little more power to actually get started but usually doesn't require much when moving. Tire size can be cheaper than changing gears, a larger tire is going to be like having a higher gear ratio. There are numerous ways to improve gas mileage, some are expensive while others aren't. I have had a lot of vehicles that were SUPPOSED to be gas hogs but weren't. For example, a '86 Chevy 3/4 ton 4WD that got 22 mpg on backroads and 28 MPG on highway. I had a stock 350 w/ 4 barrel quadrajet carb I rebuilt both myself and 4 spd tranny with 3:23 gear ratio and 35" mud tires. Could spin the rubber right off the truck also. No pulling power for hauling loads but that wasn't the reason I got the truck, it was a looker and a mudder. A lot of people could not believe the truck got that mileage and of course we would make bets, truck had won me a lot of money or free gas, lol. (Wish I never got rid of it, hohum). Also, IMHO most of the Jeeps I seen on that site for that price range were expensive, then again I do not know if there is much difference between Canadian money and US. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
