I want to rebuild the trans in my 99 Silverado 4x4 (4L60E) and I can get a kit locallly for a decent price but I'm not sure if it will work in my trans. How much of a difference is there in all the variations of 4L60E's that I will need to make sure this kjit is for my tranny?Has anyone else bought a rebuild kit for theirs and which one would you recomend?

Before ordering a rebuild kit, you should determine which variant of the transmission you have. If it is the original trans from the 1999, the valve body should be of the latest design. Which design you have would determine which separator plate you will need.

If you use the truck to tow or haul significant loads, or shift under heavier loads for any other reason, you should consider upgrading the 3-4 clutch to 7 or 8 plates, and the forward clutch to a higher plate count using better grade clutch discs and steels. A kit including Red Eagle friction discs and Kolene steels is usually higher quality. A five pinion planetary gearset may also be a desirable upgrade. A replacement reaction sun gear shell is also a nearly mandatory upgrade, and a new full-width kevlar band to match the shell is a good upgrade.

On a transmission rebuilt kit you need to get one with good quality clutches and seals and sealing rings.
The better kits have BW or Raybestes clutch plates on good quality seals and sealing rings and gaskets.
But just drop a kit in days are over.
As Blue Bowtie said most of them need upgrades.
Also on most transmission rebuilds you will need to replace the converter and a lot of hard parts and bushings.
Also flush rad cooler or upgrade it to.

I would suggest getting a ATRA or ATSG repair hand book on your transmission.
Most transmission parts places have them.
Most of them will led you threw the rebuild and cover upgrades.
Also go to Sonnax web site or get a parts book from them for trans specialties on valve body and valves and servo and bushing up grades.

Also be prepared to buy some special transmission tools.

i also need to rebuild a 4L60E in a '00 1500 2wd. first and second gear do fine but slips when shifts to third and doesnt enage it slows down till it shifts back to second. i would appreciate any advice you could give me as to the problem and solutions. if you think it needs to be rebuilt where would be the best place to get parts and do i need any specialty tools?

Welcome to AF.
It is better to start a New thread/ new post on your problem.
This post is almost a year old.
Always check the date on a post before posting to it.
If it is old let sleeping dogs sleep.
With a New thread post back all info and someone will help you.

But first make sure it needs a rebuild.
Lot of computer stuff and engine/transmission sensors and wiring that can go bad that will cause it to act up.
A good scanner check with a engine capable scanner will give you a lot of info and point you in the right direction.
If any codes post back codes.

How many miles is on it?
How is the fluid level and condition and how is the filter?
Has the transmission ever been serviced?
Any check engine lights on?

A good full rebuilt can run you 750 -1000 $ or more in parts plus another big chunk for special tools.
I like the Factory GM rebuilt transmissions.
Good warranty around 3 years 75K miles nation wide parts and labor.

im not sure of the mileage but it is over 130000. i changed the fluid and filter and the old fluid was slightly dark and was thick like it was 90w. the filter wasnt too bad in my opinion but i dont have much experience with transmissions.i dont know if the transmission has ever been serviced because the truck was given to me by a friend that owns a building company. the instrument cluster does not work so i dont know if the check engine light is on or not.
thanks for the tips on starting a new thread instead of posting to an old one. i am not very tech savy on computers but am learning slowly.

Dash not working is a red flag on transmission not working right.
No speed signal or speedometer not working means no transmission shifting.
Get it on a good engine/transmission capable scanner.
Good Luck

I must say that is the first time I have visited that link. I am IMPRESSED!! Talk about a detailed description!! I almost felt as if I could conquer something as complicated as an automatic transmission!! I am also impressed by the knowledge of several of our members and am humbled. Well, let me get back to work now. Shhhhhsssush! Don't tell anyone!

Sincerely,
Matt

i got the dash working by putting a jumper wire in between two of the plugs in the OBDII port. the check engine light is not on, the speedometer is reading accurately, i put it on a scanner and it didnt have any codes showing, it still is not engaging third gear though. i guess i will rebuild the transmission over the next summer. thanks for all the help.
