'95 Olds 88 Transmission Problems

My automatic 88 makes a funny stuttering/spitting sound when im trying to accelerate. The sound seems like it comes from the rear driver's side (maybe rear passenger side too). The more gas I give it (and more work I put on the engine like going up a hill or something), the more noise it makes and it accelerates up to a limit but not more than that.

I mainly drive it from home to college which is about 7 hours of highway miles each way. I'm not sure how much wear that puts on it. I haven't driven it much since the problems started though.

Recently I started shifting with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, then D gears as if it was a manual (I'm not sure if thats making it worse or not), and there is no noise at all and it accelerates just fine.

A mechanic said it needs a new one (like from a junkyard or something) which is going to be like $400 to $600 total with installation. I would rather get a new car than doing this, but I really would like to keep this one. Can someone please help, give advice, or something? Thanks a lot

Oh yea, its has a supercharged engine (LS) and 215000 miles

The trans is under the hood, how is it making this " noise" as you describe from the rear, from our desks commenting on a condition as you describe it is almost impossible. If this is a misfire or sputtering that comes from the exhaust which is to the rear, then it is not a trans problem, has a qualified mechanic driven the car and actually diagnosed the problem?

yea the mechanic drove it (i dont know how qualified he was, though) and i was in the passenger seat. he heard it coming from the rear. his diagnosis was that the transmission was going out and needed to be replaced. one of my uncles who knows a little about cars said it might be something wrong with the exhaust. I dont know

Can't help from here, someone has to drive the car, try another mechanic and get an explanation of the exact cause of the noise and post back.

i took it to AAMCO and they said the chain in the transmission was slipping.... or it was doing something like that.

Due respect here, you have been unable to relay any accurate or pertinent info on this problem, again, find out " exactly" what was said!

sorry this whole thing is kind of frustrating. i just called them, he said the transmission chain was slipping. i dont know exactly what that means but thats what he told me. he drove it around with me and saw what i was talking about.

they said it would be about $1200 to take out the transmission, take it apart, find the exact problem, then it would be a little more to have it fixed.

I'm probably just going to get another car, though
