95 Aurora Tranny acting really wierd or is it the ECM?

Hello, I just recently bought a 95 Aurora, it was involved in a front end deer collision, the damage was NOT major at all, it still needs a new hood, but that is only part of the problem. It will shift so hard when shifting into reverse, and bangs into drive as well. I drove the car from Florida back to Ohio with no problems on the highway(but still banging into reverse and drive when i stopped for gas and food). I do not know what to do. If i let the car sit overnight, in the morning it will drive like a champ for about 5 minutes, then it will hesitate(like it has a bad fuel filter or something), then it will stick into 2nd gear and not do anything else. I dont know about you, but hearing the roaring engine and still going 55 mph is not the kind of car i want. I need serious help here, i do not have the money to purchase a new transmission or the time. I am a college student, and in need of some help and guidance in this area. Please help me. You can email me at SilverSpyder33@hotmail.com, or SilverSpyder33@yahoo.com. Also, the starter, plugs wires, and ECM WERE RECENTLY REPLACED. PLEASE HELP ME with this issue!! THANKS!! Adam THIS CAR is STUCK in 2nd GEAR, neutral and reverse and park all work, but it is STUCK in 2nd gear. PLEASE HELP ME!! :banghead:

Wow, I thought I was reading my own post on this forum a couple of years ago. I too hit a deer and the car just fell apart mechanically. Same kind of problems. I don't know how much you paid for your car but, I would suggest looking at the other posts regarding your problem and other problems that this POS has. The deer just made them appear a little earlier. You can try to replace the ECM with another used one. It is easy to do and relatively inexpensive. Hopefully that will fix your problem. It didn't with mine. You might be prompted to do what I did when I really looked into the problems this car manefests regularly. Sell the car cheap, chalk it up to a learning experience and go on. If you don't, you may find that your wallet seldom sees the inside of your pocket. Good luck.

Check your connections on the tranny .....then the next thing is check the two shift solenoids in the valve body....the last thing is to check the Torque converter sensor...follow this link for more info.....http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/khalidjamal123@sbcglobal.net/lst?.dir=/4T80E+Doc.&.view=l

OK gentlemen Aurora goes into the shop in 1 hour to diagnose the codes fromthe SES light. Cant wait to see what they come up with now. We will see what happens, but im pretty sure it's gonna be the ecm. I will do what khalid asked, and have them check everything while im in there. thanks to ALL of you for your experience and hardships in trying to find out whats wrong with these pieces. ~~Adam~~:2cents:

:2cents: ok well after dishing out some $$ they told me i had some RAM and CAM codes in there (which they deleted), and the car shifted so smooth for a few times, than back to BANG! well, its been a few days, and ive unplugged the battery, i drove it today. and to my surprise, its not shifting hard at all, but it STICKS in 2ND gear after 5 Minutes! i cant go anywhere going 45@4k rpm. thats nuts! :uhoh: So im still lost. I just got done ripping the replaced ecm out of the dash, the serial number is 16197429 one. So im still lost on what to do. i have noticed though that if it sticks in 2nd while going somewhere, if i stop the car, shut if off, then turn it back on, it will go back to normal driving, but i do not know how long this lasts, since i do not drive to any locations more than 12 minutes. so im still stuck on what to do. my tranny is a 3.48 ratio, and the dealership told me to find computers 16180517 or 88961146, then bring it in to have it programmed at the dealership (1 hour $70 work). so i dont know what to do now. please help again. anything would be good lol. thanks to all of you for your help!

2nd gear is awfully like notorious pcs filter between shift solenoids...
also on 95 you cant flash pcm. you have to use eeprom which came with your car.
also first off i'd be looking into lower valve body and check sol's and FILTER !
getting delco solenoid kit WITH BRACKET and installing it asap....

EDIT: it'll be quite amusing, if from deer impact pcs filter in lower valve body just stuck out about 1mm out of body. it is in line of impact lenghtwise =)) you know, w/o deer it happened to me - same limp mode symthoms, only 1st and 2nd. dont drive car like this. check lower valve body. turned out it was that tiny filter sticking out about 1-2mm
EDIT2: dealership is obviously haven't got a clue about auroras and trying to rape you... RAM and CAM codes - we laughed and laughed and laughed...

read up... it's a solenoid/filter problem most likely. repair kit from delco is 50$. writeup on doing the job is on ACNA site.
banging would indicate pressure regulation problem (PCS solenoid) but looks like your PCM adapted the pressure now, and only cant perform shifts....

edit: really dude, you had to read codes long ago...it's not too late for it ! if im right it'll be 'Solenoid A problem','Solenoid B' problem and 'Shift solenoid malfunction'....

so can you give me a step by step process on what to do or check? thanks again

first off, it's most likely not doable by you.... it involves dropping the tranny pan with draining fluid, carefully taking out the valve body, disassembling valve body, replacting sol's + filter + putting on the bracket which is inside the delco kit (it is to prevent this from happening again).

here's writeup:
http://aurorah.proboards47.com/index.cgi?board=1stgen&action=display&thread=1139486581

note that you also need new filter kit (2 filters), and about 8.5 quarts of tranny fluid (dexron III).

well just got mine back:
cleaned and tightened pc solenoid terminals at pcm. fuction tests check ok. possible connection problem or internal pcm interminttent failure...$53.00

the thing that gets me is they replaced the PCM 2 months ago...i am guessing they forgot to tighten it down.....

ok i got some tranny fluid and filters, and my dad and i are going to drop the tranny down and have a look. where do you get the delco kit from?

ok tomorrow we are gonna drop the tranny and get that started, it might be the filters and sol's. i got the ecm out of the car unplugged it and all, 16197429 is the number on the outside. opned her up, the blue thingy prong says bmrx 16210105 on the op. i dont know what that means. i can take pics if it would help anyone. we'll see if the tranny thing helps, if not then i dont know. i hope the selenoids and filters work. thanks again.

well i re-installed the nfactory radio/cd/tape player. This car also has 20" rims on it. after plugging the ECM back in, and reconnecting the battery, i took it for a short drive. Id did not act up for a while, a lot longer than what it usually did. i drove it in 3 all the way though. a few seconds after putting into OD on the highway it went nuts, the ses light came on and here we go, stuck in 2nd again. Im going to drop the tranny tomorrow, and check the filters and change fluid. any help would be appreciated!! thanks!~!

mate don't push your luck ! if im right currently you overstressing the valves by driving with incorrect fluid route !
you MUST get ACDelco kit 24211355. rockauto have it for 59$.
It have 2 sols AND AN UPDATEd bracket ! you will figure it out as soon as you get the valve body out of car. in kit also 1 longer screw - to secure bracket that holds mini pcs filter (also in kit !). before 96 tranny's was not equipped with this bracket, and tiny filter (WHICH IS BETWEEN SOLS, INSERTED into valve body) may stick a bit out causing this stressing malfunction...
any q's along - my icq is 4894213, i did it myself just month ago....

the arrow shows the 'backside' of that minifilter, right and left are solenoids (one is taken out). so if this plastic square back of filter is out even a 1mm - you loose 3rd and 4th. it must be completely inside - pushed in. in a kit you will get a straighforward bracket which will forcefully hold it it forever.

ok i have everything dropped(after alot of tranny fluid, what a mess) anyway, how do you get the sol's out?

ok got the sol's out, now about the 4th ball, do you have any pics or can you tell me exactly where it goes? im waiting on the parts to come on the truck, i licve behind the dealership and they should be here in about 4 hours. im just wondering where the 4th ball goes. thanks so much for your help, im not doing a bad job for a 22 yr old guy and his 1st tranny lol.

03-28-2007, 11:30 AM
np man ! i mean again im pressing your attention towards the filter between the sols ! you have to replace it and after then putting valve body back together use longer bolt and bracket from kit !
4th ball - look closely at the acna 'fluidy' picture ! there are 4 balls there in correct positions ! just look closely. i also had problem seeing them all at first =) it's easyer to see than explain.
mate drop me a line to 'skymoscow@gmail.com' i may be able to mail some more charts and piccis, but really at this point you know almost all there is to know about this job.

ok gents got the car back together now and more problems lol. i changed the oil and the change oil message still dings at me, how do i get that off of there? also the auto-push ait keeps coming on, the factory cd player gives me an error code 23. Now i took it for a drive after refilling the tranny fluid to a good level, and it was fine, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, fine. when i got out on the highway and put it down into o'd, lookout, here came 2nd gear again and the ses light. im totally at my wits end with this car and ive only had it for 2 weeks now. someone please tell me why my o'd is making this car do this, and what can cause 2nd gear to come on all of a sudden.

as per resetting the oil change - get to 'oil 0%' press and hold reset.
now, did you or did you not replaced the solenoids AND INSTALLED THE NEW FILTER(NOT THE ~BIG FILTERS !!!!!!!!)+bracket ? i think not and you stressing you tranny even more.
refilling the tranny fluid to a good level...
sorry mate but i give up on you.... sorry
