Hey, guys I have a winding noise that occurs when i go 15+ mph. I was looking for ideas on what to check. It comes from the front passanger side.

almost sounds like a tire rubbing on something very lightly but i checked the tires no obstructions

I coasted at 35mph with the truck neutral so i dont think it is gear related.

Anyway any ideas greatly appreciated.

Ok so i looked more into it today but still no solution. It sounds like a pack of geese are following me when i drive.

Could a warped rotor cause this problem?

Did you by chance get any resolution to this noise? I have a co-worker with a 2001 Jeep GC Limited with V8 and Quadra Trac. At 20mph a sound very similar to a piece of plastic rubbing on a tire becomes very audible and increases in amplitude with vehicle speed (not engine speed) up to about 40 mph where road noise makes it less noticeable. It is very slightly present below 20mph, but at 20 mph it's almost like a switch is thrown and the sound becomes very obvious.

People outside the car can hear it too as is apparent by their turning heads. I've taken a quick glance at the tires inside and outside looking for black areas indicating something rubbing on a tire. Nothing is apparent, and since he drives on a gravel road on his way to work, it would be very obvious if something was rubbing the inside of the tire.

A couple other posts suggested wireing harnesses or tranny vents rubbing on a driveshaft were the cause in their case. I haven't yet checked that.

Also, I had him try shifting to neutral while the noise was present and there was no change in the sound. It also doesn't seem to change when turning corners.

He's pretty certain that the noise started at the same time as his power steering leak. To me that would possibly be consistent with a wiring harness if the leaking PS fluid caused some electrical tape for a harness to deteriorate and let go.

I just wanted to find out if you happened to discover the source of your noise as another area to study.

Update: We realized today that consistently, if there is an adult in the back seat, the noise is not present. However, if his daughter is riding in her booster seat in the back with no adult back there, the noise is still present. This would seem to indicate the noise is dependent upon suspension position possibly.

I took a look underneath to see if anything is possibly rubbing on the driveshaft. There is nothing really even close to the rear driveshaft. The front is a bit harder to see, but there is not polished area on the front one.

Also, I did notice about a quarter inch length of polished area on the front of the output shaft that exits the transfer case to the rear. There is no oil here, so the seal doesn't appear to be leaking. I would not really expect that shaft to move that much in and out of the seal though during suspension travel. It seems like there should be a telescopic shaft somewhere that doesn't travel through a seal.

Do you suppose this noise could be due to something internal to the transfer case, or maybe is caused by a dry u-joint?

gunna get it fixed sometime soon .. but it makes the same noise. was told it wouldnt hurt anything... it would be alright if i didnt mind the noise : ) ..
