This light that indicates what gear the car is in is burned out I guess. How do I get to it or fix it? (2001 regal) the light is the one on the dash board.

Your mean the PRND321 LED indicator. Not good news. :grinno: There is a lamp driver module in the IP cluster that can go bad. Problem is you normally have to replace the complete IP. However, there is a company that will repair them named Southern Electronics. The IP must be removed and sent to them. If you get a new IP then the odometer settings will be off or at zero so it will need to be programmed.

Jerry,
Is your odometer out also? I thought the module controled both.
My daughter has the same auto and both LED's are out. I'm considering getting one on e-bay and swapping out the instrument cluster.

the only light that is out is the one indicating what gear the car is in. It is the one on the dash. The odometer is working just fine.

I recall the same module supplies the shift and odometer LEDs but the outputs feeding them are separate. So you can have a combination of problems. IMO still points to a flaky IP.

thank you- now can you tell me what fuse box takes care of the instrument panel? The one in the car or the one under the hood?

The relevant fuses will be at the fuse box located at the right hand side of the dash.
