1994 Gmc Sierra Question *UPGRADE*

I was looking at ( www.performanceproducts4trucks.com) and found that i can get a " Lower Temp Thermostat " for my truck , but i was wondering if it would work with my setup, i currently have " tru dual exhaust, a cold air intake, a throttle body spacer, and im going to be getting a set of headers, and a computer chip probably in the summer. I was told that this does help your engine but am not sure and dont want to spend $21.95-Shipped on somthing that wont even help me. So if anyone has any previous experience with this item please give me as much information as you can and your answer if it's worth it or not.

If the engine is at a lower temp, the timing can be advanced a little more before it starts to ping; however, if you put this tstat in, you should also install a matching chip at the same time. If you don't the ECM will see that the engine is colder and give it more fuel. The stock chip is designed for the engine to run with a 195 stat. If too much fuel is delivered to the engine, it can get past the rings and wash the oil off the walls of the engine. This can ruin the engine so be careful.

My biggest issue with the tstat and most chips is that it forces you to use 91 or higher octane.

Any aftermarket chip or custom chip should specify what temp the tstat should be based on the programming of the chip.

We'll the jet states to use there 180* or 160* with either the stage 1 or stage 2 chips, and from what i can see your saying if i dont go with the tstat and a chip at the same time i should just not do it? Or should i just stand clear of the entire idea and go with just headers, and possibly sum other type of upgrades for it like a pully kit or sumthing?

With the 160 stat, because the engine is running colder, they can advance the timing more; however, you will have to run 91 or higher octane all the time. With the stage 1 and 180 they do not advance the timing as much as stage 2 and I think they require 89 octane for Stage 1.

Since you have some mods to your truck, you probably can benefit from the lower tstat and a performance chip. The question is are you OK with 89 or 91 (or higher) octane gas.

Another option is a custom chip that is specific to your truck and mods (and goals). My preference is www.pcmforless.com (See http://www.pcmforless.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=47&Itemid=40). Others includes www.tbichips.com or www.fastchip.com.

I can see what you are saying with that, with the gas prices where they are at i might have to take a look at those sites and see what they have to offer. Thanks for the help it's greatly appriciated.

BTW, you don't have to pay there high prices for a lower temp t-stat, you just need to go to your local part store and ask for a lower temp t-stat, its the same thing, with out having to pay for the performance name.

Never really though of that, im gonna have to do that pretty soon, so i can pick that up and when i get alittle more money i will have to pickup a chip and the other mods i want.
