3.4 L v6 camaro looking to upgrade..

Well, my first step in upgrading my car is complete. I threw on some z28 exaust on there, it definitely sounds way better and improves performance a noticeable amount. I've been looking at the K+N FIPK intake.. http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-3010-1

Would i really notice 18hp increase? I mean is it really worth the 200 dollars?
After the intake what would be the next cheapest way to get it faster?

BTW what site do you guys order your stuff on?

Not much market for the 3.4 :sorry:

A lot of parts for the 3.4 can be found at www.ftpp.net

My :2cents:... If your going to spend $200 on an intake, then get the SLP cold air intake. It's alot better, though you're not going to see an 18 hp increase, you would probably see somewhere around 10 hp.. and that applies to any intake.

Next I would go with headers, and remove the cat/or upgrade it with a hi-flow one.

Cool, i don't see the SLP intake on that site. But i did notice a low temp thermostat. Would this be worth getting? ALong with a Jet stage 2 performance chip?

A low temp thermostat is good assuming the price is right, the performance chip is a waste of money though.

Im gettin mixed opinions on it all. Why do you say it's a waste? the thermostat can be had for like 20 bucks shipped..I just wanna make sure what i get isn't going to be a waste..

Well right now this is pretty much my order of stuff to buy.

1. tint
2. wheels
3. low temp thermostat
4. cold air intake
5. performance chip
6. headers

Anything else or is any of this a waste?

You can get a 180* thermostat at Advance auto parts for $5, it's made by Stant or something like that, but it works just the same as those name brand's on that site. I wouldn't suggest going with a 160* stat, as you would need tuning to compensate for that. The Jet chip isn't exactly a waste of money, it's just for more heavily modified cars, so you wouldn't see quite the gain you would imagine since you're pretty much running a stock setup. So it's not exactly the best investment at this point for you.

You can find the SLP cold air intake at www.byunspeed.com. Thats where I bought mine from and they're pretty fast and reliable.

Alright. Cool. What have you all done to your firebird? How much HP you think you got it up to?

hey blind, does PCM4Less do 3.4 cars??

I think from reading up on the other forum, that only FastChips does tuning on the 3.4's. And from what I've heard, they don't do any custom tuning, just basic upgrades like adjusting gear ratios and what not.

I've just done the SLP cold air intake, pacesetter headers, cut out the cat and put on a Borla cat-back. Not sure if you would consider it a mod, but I recently put on some Accel spark plug wires lol. I have no idea how much HP it has... since the 3.4 only comes with 160 hp stock, I'd imagine I'm probably around 175-180 at the crank. They're really hard to get alot of power out of em. It takes real patience, alot of ingenuity, and dedication to get some good numbers out of it. Especially since custom tuning at this point is almost unfeasible.

how fast do you wanna go? with a 3.4 it's gonna be hard to go fast for cheap, unless you run a big nitrous shot. i'd start out with a good flowing exhaust and intake. you'll notice a good difference in performance and it will make it quicker. but right now your maybe making 140whp so your probably running low 16's if not slower. nice flowing exhaust and intake will get you in the 15's i would think. honestly i'd just save any money you would spend on the 3.4 and pick yourself up and lt1. i know a kid back in highschool who converted a 3.4 firebird into a 350 formula with an lt1. well worth it.

If you want to know what the v6 camaro can do take a look at this site http://www.turbov6camaro.com/home.htm he has done some kickass shit to his v6 and it runs good, if you want to do better then that start saving up for a z28

put some FWD 3.4 heads on it

Andrew, from that link, has a 3.8. That's a totally different than this guys 3.4. So alot of that information on his site wouldn't be very relevant to this guy's motor.

put some FWD 3.4 heads on it
In order to achieve that he would also have to swap out the pistons from a FWD 3.4, and the lower and upper intake manifolds. There's alot more to it than just swapping the heads. Though that would be nice though.

Just thought I would those couple of things out.

Yes andrew's car is a great example of what's going on in the 3.8 world, but the 3.4 is a far cry.

a 3.4 camaro is better to mod then a 1.9 sohc saturn sl1, but i'd just throw in a 350. i just sold my old short block for 250.00 bucks. thats how cheap you can get into a 350.

even thought it would be ugly at first you should get pvp pipe from the hardware store. the 200$ intakes are a waiste in my opinion. its a proven fact that pvp pr pvc w/e its called dissipates heat more efficiently than aluminum. just paint it or something and itll be alot better. biggest thing u can do is start tearing out stuff you dont need in the car. my first was the back seats. WHO'S GONNA FIT BACK THERE ANYWAYS ! lol. besides that def do the exhaust upgrade and port n polish ur intake and exaust manifold. if you have money get and upgrade on your intake and exaust valves. pulleys n w/e else u want. just watch our cus u might need to watch ur injectors and fuel pump.

Hold up, you're saying that pvc piping dissipates/transfers heat better than aluminium? right..

go ask formula drivers. do me a favor, get ur aluminum intake and a piece of pvc pipe...put your hand in both pieces one at a time; and hold a lighter in the pipe where ur hand is..tell me which one starts burning you first. it seriously doesnt take that much knowledge to know which one will hurt first. or just go dyno it if u have that option.

just get some nitrous. or put together a turbo kit.

pyroman, dissapation of heat means that it TRANSFERS heat better. i.e. aluminum, which will heat up, DISSAPATES heat better. that is bad for intakes, since that means it will get heatsoaked.. however. PVC pipes should never ever be used in the engine compartment.. at least if its going to get decently warm. PVC pipes SHRINK when they are heated.. if they dont melt first. the plastics used in cars are NOT pvc.. im sure you can make an intake that would work w. pvc.. but they arent made to be smooth internally. a pvc pipe with fittings/etc would create some major turbulence in the intake.., i think? well, whatever works i guess.. but dont use PVC where its gonna get hot (i tried this...)

or build it for the spray and dont blow it....N2o cars are fun as hell when built right! hell now that im thinking about it i need to go fill my bottle this week, im on E. thats when all the cobra's and vipers and stuff want to actually play...any other time they dont wanna halfway look at u when u next to them... well not so much the cobra's they always wanna play..gotta love them ford guys they like the grude races lol

Well, I'm not here to agrue with anyone. All I know is that I tried it on my car and dynod it and it proved more efficiently. If you cut off the end fittings like I did; there is no turbulance. and if your engine compartment is getting so hot that it melts the pipe then you have a bigger problem anyways. try what you want man; I'm just trying to give tips that proved to be efficient in my point of view.

the 3.4 on it's own isn't gonna get you far. your options are turbo, nitrous, or V8 swap.
