Is Carbon fiber supposed to be flimsy?79_MonteCarlo 10-04-2002, 07:57 PM Is cabon fiber supposed to be flimsy. I was just wondering cause a guy i know just got what looks like a carbon fiber hood, but it flexes completly inside out if you put a little pressure on it. I'm talking about 10 pounds turning it completly inside out! SilverLotus340R 10-04-2002, 09:41 PM its prolly some p.o.s fake one. Carbon fibre is supposedly the toughest lightest substance made.. CivvySedan 10-05-2002, 01:00 AM OK, here's the deal. Carbon fiber has one of the best strength to weight ratios known to man. This means that pound for pound it is superior to metal. BUT, thin layers of carbon fiber can be flimsy and you can even tear it like paper if it's thin enough. Just like you can tear metal if it's thin enough (aluminum foil). If parts made of carbon fiber are manufactured CORRECTLY which some people have a hard time doing, they are superior. But since a lot of these guys are trying to make a quick buck, they make inferior carbon fiber hoods and other stuff and make it look bad for the rest of us who are making quality parts. So the answer is, they did not use enough layers of carbon fiber and did not use a core material, or it's not really carbon fiber, with some of these who knows.
