Delta 88 Royale, 1989 Model, 3.8 Engine, Crankshaft Position Sensor Woes

Hello everyone! I had a car a long time ago with problems starting and it was diagnosed to be the crankshaft position sensor.

Now, I have a 1989 Delta 88 Royale that also started having minor starting problems, it was taking a long time to start but that's all that was wrong.

As preventative maintenance, I decided to change the crankshaft position sensor, I figured it probably was never done anyway.

As soon as I changed the crankshaft position sensor, the car will not start at all now. It cranks but that's it.

I think I probably did something wrong when I changed this sensor because the problem of not starting didn't happen until I put the new one in.

Do you guys have any advice for a beginner?

Welcome to AF. Make sure the sensor is adjusted properly in regard to the gap to the reluctor wheel on the balancer, were there instructions in the box.

No I didn't get any instructions.

What I did was I unbolted the original sensor while still in its bracket, took off the wire, then I put in the new sensor/bracket and bolted it in the way the old one was. If there was something that I was supposed to do after that, I didn't know to do it. That's probably it then, but I don't know how to adjust the gap or what it should be set to. :(

To save typing here, go to autozone.com/repairinfo for an online shop manual.

now come on... be nice to the guy... we can't go scaring people away like that.... have you got a hayne's manual? that's an excellent place to look for info. It should go through a very indepth engine overhaul. this means you should find it eventually.

I'm afraid a manual will just tell you to use GM's very very expensive alignment tool.

I saw a post where someone cut a strip from a matchbook cover & folded it over the sensor. He left the screws on the sensor a little loose & put the balancer on to center the sensor. Then remove the balancer & finish tightening the screws. Slip the balancer back on to double check that it's still centered. I'm sure you get the general idea. Just don't forget to remove the paper.:grinyes:
