The only way to be sure is to scan the PCM for data with the engine running and see what the MAF reports. If the g/S data is unreasonable, but the MAF is still reporting, start looking for contamination on the MAF TFT sensor, splits or cracks in the intake ducts, a disconnected or damaged CCV tube, PCV tube, or other external air leak.

With no/faulty MAF the ECM turns to default mode, that is it delivers enough fuel to make sure it runs...and this may mean higher fuel consumption..but it runs.
MAF indeed get sick, sometimes the little heated wire that intercepts the air stream gets dirty and does not procure adequate responses . I had cleaned mine with alcohol and solved a problem like this. However check that 12v supply is properly delivered to sensor: at least one case was reported the pink wire with black stripe that delivers 12v to MAF pinC was cut or corroded at a large plug nearer to the ECM....
