97 Neon not startingMic1980 02-07-2007, 05:31 PM Ok what happened is I woke up and the car would not crank. I get juice to the radio and lights. When I turn the key a I can barely hear the current of electric being sent to the starter but the starter doesn't crank. I'm wondering if this can be one those situations where cranking the fly wheel manually? would help. I'm not exactly sure where the cranking is done but any ideas and direction would be great. added information: Last winter I had the same problem and rebuilt the starter. But when I put the starter back and turned the key nothing happened at first until I played with the transmission moving it threw the gears. This car has been notorious for starters. das2123 02-09-2007, 09:26 AM Start with the obvious things first. Have the battery checked, check your cables and connections and clean the up. Check your ground to the starter, relay and fuse for the starter. Mic1980 02-18-2007, 12:07 PM Well I checked the fuses, relay and battery connections seem good. So I grabbed a wrench and tried to remotely start the starter. When switch is actuated the starter just spins and the engine does not turn. From what I read on my neon book it says if the solenoid works but the clutch within the starter is worn. Mic1980 02-22-2007, 10:13 AM Well guys I tapped the starter yesterday and the car started. Now every other start I must tap the starter in order for the car to start. Could this be a loose connection? KimMG 02-22-2007, 10:17 AM Most likely it's time for a new starter. Mic1980 02-23-2007, 11:56 AM ok any tips on replacing the starter I have done it twice on this car. I know I have to move the motor mount and remove the 2 radiator fans plus battery housing etc... anything else? I notice the lower radiator hose gets in the way but I don't want to make a mess. das2123 02-23-2007, 12:01 PM You don't have to remove the radiator fans. Motor mount removal is a must. After you unbolt the starter loose, turn it vertically to slide it down and out. Mic1980 03-08-2007, 07:20 AM Well removal is not going to be neccessesary. After wacking the troubled starter somany times the starter now cranks on it's own again. It has been going strong for like a week now. Finaly good luck comes my way. I'm thinking of bringing back the used starter and getting my 35 bucs back. das2123 03-08-2007, 08:25 AM I guess you got the starter to spin. Mic1980 03-12-2007, 09:58 AM Speaking of the devil it died on me! at a Building 19 parking lot. I replaced the starter in 1 hour & 15 minutes. I was proud of myself for doing it that fast since the previous times it took so much longer. I pulled it from the top instead of the bottom. Now it cranks beautifully. Just thought i'd let ya know. das2123 03-12-2007, 10:10 AM :worshippy Way to go! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
