2000 Buick Century due to EP test. How to..

Hi Everybody:
I Canada we have a law that requires car owners to submit their car to EP (Enviroment protection -emission) when they are due to get issued annual licence plate sticker. am required to bring car for test this month. (Birthday date).

My car is 2000 Century - 3.1 engine. I have had here already several issues that our forum experts helped me to solve. (Transmission failure). Thanks again guys!
My question is:
In order to get a clean test results, some guys were suggesting following:
Fill the gas tand with high octane gas, put gas conditioner in fuel and most important, warm the car really good before you take it to the shop to be tested.
My car has now 69500 km on the clock. Should I be worried?
I am sure that many visitors here (I do not know whether US car owners are subjected to the same thing), would be interested to know how to pass this damn test.
Thank you
Peter

Hi Peter,

Emissions tests vary from state to state in th U.S. Some jurisdictions don't have any emissions testing. But the rule of thumb is all cars must meet Federal and State emissions requirements. Most of us are not familiar with vehicle laws up in the Great White North. What does your test consist of?

In my state, Texas for odb-ii cars from 1996 and up they hookup a special certified scan tool to the odb-ii port located under the steering column. Then you will either pass or fail. I really don't think it is necessary to run premium unleaded fuel to pass or run an engine-fuel additive. Definitely a good idea to make sure the car is fully warmed up and the PCM switches into closed loop mode and has IM emissions ready flagged as a go.

Most odb-ii scanners will tell you whether the system meets IM ready. I have an Actron CP9145 odb-ii scanner that I hook up about a week before the annual emissions test is due. This will give you time for any corrective action, if necessary. And the day before I run the test one final time just to be safe.

Thank you Bnaylor!
You never fail to give a good advice to us.
I spoke to a guy who does the tests and he comforted me by saying that no need to panic. If the car runs good, is warmed up, it will pass with flying colors according to him.
He further said that his van uses oil and still pases the test. So looks like it is just another government tax on us, the drivers.
Do you agree?
Best regards
Peter

Hey Peter. Good to see you back. In my state the test isn't free so I guess you can consider it a tax. :dunno:

Any word on that litigation against GM up North?

No news on that litigation. It sort of just died down. I hear all the timer people complaining about transmissions on their Buick whining, shifting hard etc, etc.. That shows that they do not scroll down on old inputs here. You know, I would still buy a Buick next time, but with the best, long lasting waranties I could get.
I used to drive a Mercedes 300D, (before my Buick) and it kept costing me lot of money even for stupid little things like Fuel gauge ($ 350.00).
The Buick offers comparable amount of comfort.
Thanks again for your patronage here.
Peter
