What gives with my gas guage? It works fine from full to half tank, with less than half a tank it is all over the place. It will read full, empty and everyting in between. Any help will be great appreciated....

Needs a sending unit and GM does have problems with them.I belive you can get just the sending unit from the dealer and all the dealer needs is the vin off the car to get the part, bring in the insurance slip for this.

My wife's 97 fuel gage does the same thing. We have to fill up when she gets to 300 miles.
Why do we need to bring in the insurence slip to get a part from GM?

That is the way the dealer orders parts for GM vehicles, they go by the vin to get the part even the keys. The dealer needs the vin number off the insurance slip.Chrysler does it the same way to get parts

they all must be faulty that year.....i have a '97, and mine doesnt work at all, always shows full.....a guy i work with has the same year and model as myself, he had the SAME problem......and a friend of my brothers ALSO has the same problem

so to my assumption, the 1997 Lumina, NO gas gauges work LOL
