What's that noise?

I have a '93 Delta 88 LSS....

When you turn the car off, the car makes this noise. It kind of sounds like a motor running or something? It sounds like its coming from the drivers side up near the dash. I don't know if it's coming from the motor or from under the dash, if that makes sense? It is hard to explain how it sounds, but I would describe it almost as a grinding noise??

Now that I think about it, sometimes it will make this noise when the car is sitting for awhile too (where it has been OFF for awhile)?

We've had the car now since about '02 and I think it's always done it. But lately I have noticed it has been doing it more. And also lately, instead of doing it for a min or two, it will do it for about 5 mins or more.

A few people have noticed it doing it and have asked me if my car is possessed. They have never heard a car do this.

Does anyone know what this could be? Is it something that should be looked at?

Check and see if the cooling fan or heater blower is running to trace this down, no other way here.

The next time you hear it try moving the heat controls, even if the car is off and see if the sound changes.

Would your car have ALC (Auto Level Control) struts in the rear? If so, they probably have a leak and the noise you here is the compressor trying to inflate the bladders to keep your car level! That would also explain the reason you here it more often now, than before. (The leak is getting worse).:uhoh:
BTW, if you do have ALC, you should pull the fuse for the compressor until you get new struts, otherwise it will eventually drain your battery!:nono:

Thanks for the responses!

I haven't had a chance to really check under the hood. We've been hit with some *frigid* weather this week (windchills in the -20s) so it's been straight from the car into the house! LOL Since it's happening more often now I will be trying pop the hood to check where the noise is coming from when its happening soon though....starting to get a little "warmer" again (above zero ;) ).

auto trainy - this car has a digital control for the heat, so I wouldn't be able to move the heat controls to see if that would be it.

hotz28 - How would I know if the car has ALC? The car didn't come with a manuel so I can't look in that.

Thanks again!

look to see if there is a hose going to the strut. there should also be a rubber shroud surrounding the groove betweet the top and bottom of the strut.
