what 3.8l can I swap into my 96 monte carlodammadmoney 01-29-2007, 09:39 PM I was wondering what 3.8l v6 engines I can swap into my 1996 monte carlo it has a 3.4l but from what I have noticed about engine problems I'm kinda wanting to get into the 3.8l. If someone could let me know whats all involved in it and what ones would work it would be much appreciated. Thanks:grinyes: corning_d3 01-29-2007, 10:59 PM I believe you would have to swap out the subframe, transmission, wiring harness and PCM. It sounds MUCH simpler than it is, however it can be done with $$$. Someone correct me if I leave anything out.. dammadmoney 01-30-2007, 02:32 AM well thats nothing new to me, I've done a few sr20det swaps on my nissan 240sx's. I was just wondering if the engine mount placement was different and if it was, then was there any 3.8l's that had the same mount placement. gw84 01-30-2007, 12:54 PM Shouldn't a 3.8L from a Lumina LTZ be an easy swap into a Monte Carlo? They're a very similar body style. The LTZ has the 4t65E transmission (If I recall correctly). What tranny is in the Monte 3.4? dammadmoney 01-30-2007, 01:45 PM well I don't know off hand I bought the car less than a week ago and guess what I was smelling gas fumes comming from the heater vents in my car so..............I took it to the dealership and had them check it out and they said they didn't find anything wrong with it :banghead: so I'm just gonna turn around and get into another car cause this one don't seem too safe. corning_d3 01-30-2007, 07:55 PM If it's a 3.4 DOHC, then yeah I'd say ditch it. As far as a swap, I'm pretty sure the subframe from a 3.8 Monte will work.. richtazz 02-01-2007, 12:24 PM They never offered the 3800 in your year Lumina, and there are subframe differences between the 98 LTZ and your 96 Monte. By the time you're done, you'll have more money and time than the resulting vehicle is worth. IF you want a 3.8 that bad, ditch the car you have and buy something that came with one. I'm not saying the swap is impossible, but it's not worth doing. corning_d3 02-01-2007, 06:09 PM I thought he had a monte...they didn't change from 95-99. except for engines/trans., did they? gw84 02-02-2007, 12:36 PM I thought he had a monte...they didn't change from 95-99. except for engines/trans., did they? I suggested that he try finding a 3.8 from a lumina LTZ, however Rich pointed out that the '96 (lumina) didn't come with a 3.8. richtazz 02-02-2007, 04:39 PM They never offered the 3800 in your year Lumina, and there are subframe differences between the 98 LTZ and your 96 Monte. He did have a Monte, I messed up saying lumina first, then corrected it at the end, sorry. They didn't offer a 3.8 in a Monte until the body style change in 2000. The 98 Lumina LTZ uses a different subframe than the Monte has, so this swap would be difficult at best. corning_d3 02-02-2007, 08:44 PM Ah, I see. I guess I should've read a little closer.. ffgus 02-03-2007, 09:55 AM well I don't know off hand I bought the car less than a week ago and guess what I was smelling gas fumes comming from the heater vents in my car so..............I took it to the dealership and had them check it out and they said they didn't find anything wrong with it :banghead: so I'm just gonna turn around and get into another car cause this one don't seem too safe.Gas fumes in car? Is you fuel pressure regulator leaking? Is the vaccuum line wet when you remove it? ffgus 02-03-2007, 09:55 AM well I don't know off hand I bought the car less than a week ago and guess what I was smelling gas fumes comming from the heater vents in my car so..............I took it to the dealership and had them check it out and they said they didn't find anything wrong with it :banghead: so I'm just gonna turn around and get into another car cause this one don't seem too safe.Gas fumes in car? Okarche71 08-11-2007, 12:18 AM Ok I have a 1996 Monte Carlo ls with a bad 3.1 I was wondering if anyone had attempted to swap one out for the 3.4 and how difficult is was and if there are any helpful hints you could pass along. I know I have to get the tranny and wiring harness along with the computer but is the anything else? I am planning on pulling the 3.4 from a 1997 Mopnte Carlo ss vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
