transmission slipping when changing gears

Hi,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I own a 1986 Cadillac deville. My transmission is slipping when it changes gears. A mechanic told me that my vaccum pump is gone in it, that I need to redo it. Can someone tell me where this pump is located at? And is it easy enough that my dad could do it for me? And where would I be able to get the replacement part if needed? Thank you for your time.

Depending on transmision and engine
What does it have in it?
Gas or diesel and what mileage?
Transmission fluid level and condition?
Has the vacuum been tested?

Make sure fluid level is full good and hot.
Some times with a service they do not get it full.
May be full cold but fluid may go down hot.
Always recheck it.

The gas engine does not have a vacuum pump.
But the transmission may have a vacuum modulator valve and vacuum line to it and also a TV pressure cable that may need checked or adjusted.
On normal take off what are the 1-2 2-3 3-4 up shift MPH?

the fluids are all full dad checked all of them for me.
Around the time I hit about 40 to 45 mph its all the way to 4.
Thanks for all of your help, I called my dad and he said he will check under neath and find out about the vacuum modulator valve and vacuum line for me. So hopefully he finds it and can fix it.

Thanks again,
Lulu :)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
I forgot but some gas engines do have a manual vacuum pump.
If you find a modulator valve on it check th valve and vacuum hose to it with a vacuum gauge.
First shift should be at 15-20 mph and second should be at 25-30 mph.with no slipping.
If not transmission modulator and TV cable needs checked and or adjusted.
Let us know how it goes.

Yes they do have a vac pump part number 22062562 which is now discontinued.the pump is located under the left fender near the radiator support. I do not see where that will cause the trans to slip though. sounds like a more serious problem in the trans itself. If the vac modulator were bad it would cause it to hang in first gear and not shift to second.
