Can I change my broken shift lever myself?

I have a '94 t-bird lx (4.6 L V-8) that had a broken shift knob for a long time and now the plastic shaft that is inside the metal lever ( that the shift button pushes down to release (and lock) the gears, has snapped off inside the metal shift lever. It broke off the very bottom piece, thankfully it stayed in so that we are still able to drive it, but can' t get the key out, because it goes into park, but it will not lock in park or any other gear. I am hoping we can change it out relatively easy and cost effectively. Any info or instructions is greatly appreciated. I have a Haynes manual and it has short and simple instructions, but does not indicate whether or not it is wise! What price range am I looking at?

I dont know how hard it is to remove the center console but the shifter itself is just held in with four bolts and the cable that actually shifts the tranny is only one bolt and non of which are hard to get out but idk how much a new shifter would cost.

Good morning, midgetracing28! Thanks for the quick reply. That is exactly what I needed to know. The console is only 4 screws also. I have actually done that already. I appreciate your time and info. I will post my end results no matter what. Have a great day!!

If anyone else has the dinero information, I am still wondering.....
