84 caprice wont startmattbarr 01-07-2007, 06:36 PM my caprice was fine one day parked it came out in the morning and it wouldnt start...when u turn the key itz like absolutely nothing.. u kno how the dash lights usually light when u turn the key none of that... the headlightz and tail lights work but nothing else...can someone please help me GreyGoose006 01-07-2007, 06:39 PM you probably have some electrical problem at the starter, or a blown fuse. silicon212 01-07-2007, 07:10 PM Sounds like an ignition switch failure. This is located on the top of the steering column, just behind the dash. bobss396 01-08-2007, 09:12 AM The first thing I'd do is to take off the battery cables at the battery and make sure they're totally clean, scuff up the mating surface on the battery too. Will it take a jump and then start? How old is the battery? The ignition switch (as silicon suggests) is easier to change than it is to diagnose, you have to drop the steering column down onto the seat to get at it. They're cheap too. Bob mattbarr 01-08-2007, 01:28 PM the batteryz new the starters new and the alternator is new..it still wont do anything if you try to jump it.i think it might be the igniton switch because when u turn the key the dashlightz and wipers and shit dont work still GreyGoose006 01-08-2007, 02:19 PM wait. the dash lights and wipers DONT work, but the headlights DO? that rules out the battery. its definitely either the ignition switch, or a wiring issue mattbarr 01-08-2007, 02:25 PM how do i get to the igniton switch and how do i know if thats what the problem is mattbarr 01-08-2007, 02:27 PM i just checked the fuse boz n it seems the only fuse thats even live is the lights fuse...i have the fuse tester where you dround it n touch th e fust or socket n it lights up the rest of the fuses or where u plug the fuses it dont light up bobss396 01-08-2007, 03:36 PM you should tell us up front what you've replaced, etc. Unless you have a blown fuse at the fuse box, stop playing with the fuse box. Online problems are hard to diagnose, but I'll say that either your ignition switch on the steering column (not to be confused with where you put the key in) or the fusible link going to your starter is bad. To get to the ignition switch, you have to undo the 2 big bolts where your steering column bolts to the dash. I think they're 1/2" or 13mm. Rest the steering wheel right on the seat. The switch bolts to the top of the column, it will have a rod that runs up to the ignition lock. I would do this first just to rule it out and its a cheap part. If you want to crawl under it to check for the fusible link, it's one of the wires that go to your starter. Just pull on them one at a time, gently. If the fusible link is blown, it will pull out of the bundle very easily. Bob mattbarr 01-09-2007, 04:40 PM i changed the igniton switch and still nothin where are the fusible links to the starter at? silicon212 01-09-2007, 05:30 PM i changed the igniton switch and still nothin where are the fusible links to the starter at? On the starter, or more appropriately, the starter solenoid. These are the smaller gauge wires (in relation to the battery cable) that connect to the solenoid terminals. mattbarr 01-10-2007, 05:31 PM how exactly do i change tha fusible links? silicon212 01-10-2007, 06:56 PM The old one will have to be cut off and a new one spliced in place. A bad fusible link can either be burned in two (extreme case), or more often the insulation (which is a rubber) will have a burned, blistered appearance to it. The wire inside the insulation will be burned in two. A fusible link is basically a wire coated in a special insulation (again, rubber vs. the standard plastic) that's two wire gauges smaller than the circuit it protects (i.e. if the circuit requires a 10 gauge feed, the fusible link will be a 12 gauge wire). Also, keep in mind that fusible links never fail out of the blue. They fail because there was a failure in the circuit it's protecting. Check for shorts. mattbarr 01-10-2007, 10:11 PM the shop i had look at it said it could be something to do with the beats i had hooked up i dunno im goinn try ta fix it tomorrow mattbarr 01-13-2007, 07:23 PM so i had the shop fix the fusible link the labor waz 50.00 and the wires were 1.58 silicon212 01-14-2007, 12:36 AM So, is it fixed? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
