93 Century Transmission problems

About 5 months ago I had NO gears in my buick century. I took the car to a private mechanic and he said the sprag gear went out. Charged me $600. The car ran good for a few months but about 4200 miles later it wouldn't shift until about 35 mph. Then wouldn't come out of 2nd at all. The longer you did drive it the more it warmed up and after about 15-20 minutes it would finally get to 3rd and OD. Now that the same mechanic say the trans is fried. There is clutch material in the pan or the torque converter must have went out. When I took it to him in the first place he said that the trans. looked BRAND NEW, that's why I had him just repair the sprag. Could he have messed something up or did I just have some bad luck here? He is charging $800 for the rebuild. Should I get a 2nd advice to see if he screwed up the first time and didn't put it back together correctly? I took it to another place before I returned it to him and they thought it was just the kick down cable (or the valve for it). They did not see the pan or particles though. Randy

Welcome to AF!!

Take the car to a transmission shop and let them diagnose it. Some mechanics know how to work on transmissions but I trust the guys that only do transmissions more. They can usually tell what the problem is fairly quickly and the diagnosis is usually free.

Thanks for the response!!
The garage that I took it to origanally is a private transmission mechanic.
He used to work for a big garage and then went on his own. He's supposed to have a good reputation. I guess $800 isn't bad for a rebuild. I was just concerned because the other garage I called on the phone thought it was a simpler problem, kick down valve. Like I said though, he didn't see the pan and what was in it.
