Hi all...glad i found such a knowledgable bunch and am looking foward to picking your brains..

a few issues

My wagons heat only blows hot when its on the freeway and really warmed up..at a light it goes cool again...i havent troubleshot at all thought id save time here...thermostat sticking?

Also, My pass. window quit working on a stormy day 1/2 down, so i took off the panel and ran wires from my battery, disconnected the leads to the power motor and stuck in the two wires and reversed the polarity..nothing happened..until i tapped it and it went right up. It was intermittently working before so is the motor bad or should i take it apart and grease it? Also, the istall looks like pain in the arse being that it is on the backside of the panel with the bolts being headless..is there a how-to or can anyone direct me ?

Lastly, it runs awesome..until i really get on it..it bogs down and i have to either feather the pedal or let off some for it to take....carb?

Also, will i be happy with the 305 adding intake, carb, cam and headers plus electronic ignition? (already has 3" dual exhaust custom)? The reason i ask is i have a beatiful built 350 sitting in my garage..I just dont want to lose mpg and dependability with the swap if it's not going to make a huge different in torque and hp (after i mod the 305). The motor has only 130k, and id like to try to get more life out of it before swapping..

i know its alot ive been saving up so thanks in advance!!!

willz0072002, welcome to AF! Relax and enjoy your stay!

First, make sure your car has a 195 degree thermostat.

Second, get a new motor for the window.

Third, by 'bogging down', do you mean it pops/sputters/backfires? This could be an indication of lobe failure on the camshaft.

Fourth, the engine already has computerized electronic ignition.

Fifth, you will be much happier with the 350, max delta between the two engines is 1-2 MPG max, and in the case that your 305 is underpowering the car, you can actually either stay where you are or even gain mileage with the 350.

hi

thanks for the quick reply...

My motor has the 4bbl...it gets almost 20mpg on the freeway and the built motor i doubt would do better than 14?

As far as hesitation goes on the freeway..it doesnt backfire or pop..it tries to open up but seems something is resticting its potential..then when i let off a little bit it goes..

no howto or has anyone replaced those motors? looks tricky.

It could well be an exhaust restriction then, such as a plugged cat.

My '88 Police Package car gets 22MPG with a 275HP 350. To throw a little contrast on that, the car actually came with the LG4 305, same engine as what's in your car. It got 22MPG on the highway. Now, there was a difference in town - it got 15MPG with the 305, and 14 with the 350, but the car is much more fun to drive. It now has enough power to get out of its own way.

The engine is actually easy to replace if you have the tools. An inexperienced person can get the job done in a day or two.

You may want to replace your heater control valve if the thermostat doesn't do it. Real easy to reach, cheap and will probably take you less than a 1/2 hour.

I also agree with a plugged up cat if the car has the original at 130k. I did mine at 145k or so and it made a huge difference on the low end performance.

I have a '84 wagon with the 305 and it flies, runs well all the time. Is the 4-barrel kicking in when you stomp it? If it wasn't that would be your bog. Look for a local carb shop to do your carb over, will probably run around $250. I had the one on my '79 wagon done and it made a huge difference.
