Engine VIN question

Is the VIN on the engine the same as the car VIN? Where is it located? The 8th digit of my Deville is a Y and I'm looking at another engine from a 99 to put in it but don't know if it will work.

Even if they are both Y engines they may not interchange, especially the electronics.. Check with a salvage yard for interchangeability thru the years.

What year is your Deville? I could help you with what years are interchangeable.

Mine is a 96 Deville. The 8th digit is a Y in the VIN.

That is the LD8 code engine, which is interchangeable from 1996-1999.

Just for my own info, how is the pcm programming in respect to the possible difference in the efi, trans and ign controls? That is where my concern would be. Harnesses the same?

The PCM is the same, just different programming. The Y and 9 VIN cars have different transmission gearings, so this is in the PCM. They also have different cam profiles, so the power is matched better to the transmission for the original engine.
If you put a 9 VIN engine (L37) in a car that originally had a Y VIN engine (LD8), it would bog off the line due to the lack of lower RPM torque.

So any northstar from 96-99 will work? How do I tell for sure what I'm getting? Is there numbers on it somewhere or do I need to know the VIN of the car it came out of?

No, not ANY 96-99 will work for your car. ANY VIN Y 96-99 Northstar will work for your car. So either try and find a donor car that has a VIN Y or if you find an engine for sale it will be the engine code LD8.

The guy with the 99 engine said these #'s were on it..6XU918462.
Does that mean anything? Where is the LD8 # at?

That looks like the last part of the VIN codes. The 8th digit of the VIN is the engine code. Can you get the first part of the codes off that engine?
