Brake pedal traveljaybird2569 12-28-2006, 01:24 PM Hello, I have a new problem with my '92 4x4 automatic. Within the last few days the brakes feel like there is no power assist to them. There is no travel on the pedal (maybe 2") then they feel like they hit a wall. I've bled both of the front brakes to make sure there is no air in the line but it's still not right. Does anyone have any insight into this problem? Thanks in advance. 4Wheel 12-28-2006, 03:21 PM Does your pedal feel different with out the motor running? Does it get a LOT harder to depress after the third or fourth pump after the motor has been turned off. OR a LOT easier once the motor is turned on? IT SHOULD! Air in the lines will cause a "spongy" or "soft" pedal not one that is hard to depress. KimMG 12-28-2006, 10:06 PM Check for a vacuum leak around the brake booster. jaybird2569 12-28-2006, 10:16 PM No, the peddle pressure does not change with the motor running or off, pumping the pedal a couple of times doesn't change anything either. The pedal doesn't feel spongy either I just thought bleeding the brakes couldn't hurt and it was quick. As far as the vacuum leak, I'll look, but isn't there only one vacuum line around the brake booster that big hose hooked to the front of the booster? Thanks again. 4Wheel 12-29-2006, 05:25 AM Sounds like you are not getting your vacuum assist. most likely a ruptured diaphragm, broken hose, broken check valve. But any of these would result in a poor idle and a lean air to fuel ratio fault code and even the CEL thrown. With the engine running get your ear near the master cylinder and listen for any vacuum leak sounds. This would be fairly loud. Have some one step on the brakes while you listen too. jaybird2569 12-29-2006, 11:03 AM Thanks, I'm going to check that stuff right now. I'll let you know what happens. jaybird2569 12-29-2006, 12:08 PM Ok, here's what's happening. I went to CarQuest and presented my problem to them. They said it is likely the brake booster has gone out (200 bucks). I came home and listened for leaks and heard a leak under the dash when I step on the pedal and another leak near the power steering pump but I can't pin point that one. I disconnected the large hose from the check valve (?) on the booster and the 4Runner runs very rough then dies. That line does have a vacuum. I'm stumped. Do ya'll think I need a new brake booster? Also when I step on the brakes the power steering pump starts whining like I have the wheels turned all the way to one side (I need to replace the pump also, it's been leaking a little fluid) Thanks. 4Wheel 12-29-2006, 12:24 PM Well that's interesting because if the diaphragm is ruptured then it would cause the same rough idle as when you took off the vacuum line. Your problem may not be in the booster at all. The power steering pump supplies the force to actuate the ABS, antilock braking system! Is your "brake" light on in your dash? Does the "brake" light, light when you first turn on your ignition, (to make sure it's not burned out)? You may have a problem with your ABS, because of what you said about the power steering. Check your belt tension on your pump. As far as your PS pump leaking you can purchase the seal kit from toyota and it is fairly easy to do. No need to buy new or even replace. Is your steering gear box leaking too? I have the rebuild kit for it brand new, never got around to putting it in, let me know if you would like it. jaybird2569 12-29-2006, 11:07 PM Ok, the brake light is not on (it does light up when I start the truck) but where is the hissing sounds coming from under the dash and by the power steering pump? The seal kit for the power steering pump sounds great, I'll see if I can get one tomorrow. I'll have to clean all of the power steering fluid off the steering gear box to check it for leaks. Thanks again for the help. 4Wheel 12-30-2006, 06:49 PM Does your power steering work ok? The hissing near your ps pump could be on of the tw vacuum lines connected to a pressure switch on the power steering pressure line. Is there always a hissing comming from under the dash or just when you apply brakes? jaybird2569 12-31-2006, 12:43 AM Power steering works ok, makes a bunch of noise when I'm turning or putting on the brakes. The hissing under the dash and by the pump only happens when I step on the brakes. Where is the pressure switch? I'll try to check it tomorrow. Thanks. 4Wheel 12-31-2006, 02:41 AM How was the belt tension? fluid level in the pump? jaybird2569 12-31-2006, 08:56 AM Belt tension seems fine (same as alternator belt) fluid level is ok. Like I said the pump is leaking a little fluid so I have to addd maybe 2oz a week. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
