im looking into purchasing a 1988 cadillac deville 4.5 liter v8 from a close friend of mine for a relatively low price (less than 500)..it has 124k miles...i took it to a small town car tune-up place and i was informed it had quite a few problems...my budget to fix it up (if i buy it) is $3500-$4000 tops... the problems are:

1. pressure lines leaking - $
2. transmission fluid is brown - $
3. Brake fluid is brown - $
4. Coolant bypass pipes corroded (can they be replaced?) - $
5. Intake manifold gasket, timing cover gasket leaking oil - $
6. oil cooler lines leak oil - $
7. engine oil filter housing leaks oil - $
8. engine knocks @ idle - $
9. timing cover leaking oil bad - $
10. rear main seals leaking oil - $
11. transmission pain gasket and axle seals leaking - $
12. rear wheel cylinder leaking fluid - $
13. needs shoes and hardware for rear - $
14. Engine and trans mounts - $
15. trans cooling lines - $

ps..thank you!:)

also! the car had just been sitting outside for 2-3 years with no crank/run time so we think that may be the cause of some problems (if that means anything)

Welcome on your first post.
Your best bet is to have a good repair shop look at it and give you a estimate on it.
But
There may be no end to the repair on it. :eek7: :shakehead
Knowing the 88 Deville 4.5 I would be looking for a better car that has less problems.
Also a person is a lot better off not to have dealings with family and friends.
If you want them to remain friends and family.
I know I have been there and done that.

Agreed with MT-2500, if only 1/2 of the problems need to be done that car is not worth it and it will not end there. Run from this!

You can buy a 1998 Deville for the $3,500-$4,000 you plan to invest into this car! I agree with the others, that car has too many small problems. And small problems add up very quickly, get very annoying to fix, and end up costing you much more than you'd wish to spend!
If you really were planning to spend $4,000 on this car, just take that money and buy a 1998 Deville! You will be much happier in the long run, and have a much nicer car to start with.

Good luck!
