Just found this Wikipedia article on the History of GRand AMs and thought it was very interesting.

Over the years they changed the body and engines several times.

Even dropping the Grand am line twice before the 2006 end of the N-bodies.
The first time they came out was 1973-75, stopped production then in 1978-80 they reintroduced them.
Thier was even a stationwagon available the first year of production.

Finally the one's most people are aware of, the 1985-2005 models or N-Body, which had the longest run.

When they ended the run in 1980, they replaced it with the pontiac 6000 :disappoin (And we know where that ended)

Now they've replaced it again with the G6.
Lets hope they bring Grand Am's back again in the years to come but with less troubles. :grinyes:
Seems to be a marketing trend/stratagy for automakers .

Here is the Wikipedia link for Grand Am's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Grand_Am).
Has a nice chart at the bottom showing the years verses other car models and the years they were in production.

Feel free to post your thoughts or comments.

a cuopla links to the first gen GA:

as for the G6 cars, they are a bit average looking but with an available supercharged 3.9L they look inviting. I wish the body style was more like the GA GTs.....

Little do people know that the first G/a's that came out were supposed to be GTO's. GM pulled the badging before it hit the showrooms, and was offered as the Grand Am. It was going to have a GTO option instead at the point, but I have not found out if it was ever offered. The Grand Am has gone through many changes through the years and different options available. The GT trim line didn't emerge until 1992, and was only offered in a 4 cyl up until that point highest trim was the SE. 1993 GT brought the v6 engine. They had a few "rare" G/a's such as the 1987 2.0 Turbo charged G/a WITH a manual tranny, only a handful were ever made, the hard to find 93-95 G/A with the V6 and manny tranny, The extremely hard to find 2000 Supercharged 3.4V6 G/a. There were other rare cars such as the Olympic Edition, The 25th Anniversary and the 75th Anniversary, as well as a few one of kinds pace cars......

Unfortunetly the Grand Am is not one of the top pick for classic cars at this time... people still want thier chevelle, GTO's, 442s and other classics. I believe the Demand is starting to grow for this forgotten car....

crazy jim: the G6 GTP does not have a supercharged verison out for the 3.9, you can buy an aftermarket... but unfortunetly it does not come with it. ( it was only an idea from GM that i know of) Personally you wouldn't need it... they are quick as is!

I almost bought a 75' GA when I bought my 76' 442 back in 92'. Both had 455's and were rather fast cars for as big as they are. I'm glad I choose the 442 though, it was such a fun car to play in :D

I have the same cluster gauge package, and shifter on my 442 as that 73' has. :uhoh: ........ heres a pic of my 76 442' (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c242/xeroinfinity/11X17RW24/76olds442_R.jpg)(to bad it doesnt look that good now)

They are definatly big cars.
Glad they shrank them down to midsized.
Tho those later models got small, but they were ugly :grinyes:

Now heres that 3.1L turbo in an 87' factory setup.

Heres that 03' supercharged one :(

I have a pic of that 04' that they made with the SC(only 10 were made) but I cant seem to find it ......
here it is :)

A 3.8 turbo would be nice in the 2010 models
Oh ya with a 6spd :ylsuper:

The 3.1L turbo set up that you show is actually for the Grand Prix if I'm not mistaken. The 87 came in 4 different engine options, the 2.5 L, the 2.4 Quad 4, the 2.0 Turbo and the 3.0 v6. The 3.0 was only offered that year. The other 3 engines were offered in from basically 85-91... the 2.0 turbo was only offered from 86- until about 90 before it was disontinued.

I do love the 442's though... I like the 69-71 model years the best.

I assure you that is a factory 3.1 in a white GA. It may have been an 88' . I'll find the fuller pic!

Also the 3.0L was avail in 86'. My wifes first GA was the 86', it would waste my 442' till she toped out about 105mph

OK! MY BAD !
It is an 88' 3.1 turbo heres the pixs.

Yes I would agree on the 69, but up till 72' they were badass. Still smaller(like chevelles) and with plenty of HP.

I could not pass up on the 76', for $650 !
(and spunn the tires all the way home ):ylsuper:

Great info. I just helped my brother look for a car to buy and he got a 2000 grand am. When i drove it i was surprised how strong the 4 cyclinder engine is and the car had lots of room which i didn't expect. Car runs good. I only notice a few things here and there but i'll post them at another time. He just got the car smogged and it passed the smogg test with no problems, these are good cars and they look good too.

hmm, looking at more G6 cars these days... I do have to say that I dont like the look lol, from the back they look kinda weird... on the pontiac site they seem to look sleek in a sense... they seem kinda boxy from the back, if they were a little wider Id be happy lol

whenever I do get rid of the GA, if I stay with pontiac .. either GTP/GXP if I can afford it or a 02' WS6 :grinno:

I forgot about the 86 with the 3.0L. They are quite, quick... I loved taking off in my fathers 87, with the 3.0.

Now I still have to question you about that 3.1L turbo you are showing. I'm baffled. I've never seen nor heard of that in that year. After 87 they went strictly into 4 cyls, only until 93. I'll check my spec sheets later on.... I think that's a modified g/a sweet though, probably very very fast too!

Crazy Jim: nice olds! don't care for the color... but looks great!!!!

gir: i know what you mean about the look of the g6 sometimes... it just doesn't look good and others it looks sleak and sporty. it's all a matter of angles, lighting, etc. it's still fun to drive though!

:iagree:
I dont like the G6 look very well either :grinno:
The G5's look to small, but I havent sat in one to see how they feel or drive/ride....

Who wouldnt want a WS6 :lol2:
But, I dont want that premium insurance cost that comes along with it . :eek7:

Hey crazy_jim,
what year is that cutlass?

Looks good!

I think it was like the 01-03 Supercharged GA,
they only produced a few and then they make thier way into the hands of people like us :D
I'm still digging on one of those factory SC GA's.
I know of 2 now in Canada,
but I was told that they are not, and will not ever be for sale :dunno:
I'll just have to keep digging, because I heard thier were 10-12 SC GAs made.....

Cutlass Supreme SX is a '71, its identicle to my first car back in '79. I can't decide if I want to change the color or keep it the same for old time sake. Back in high school all my buds gave me a hard time calling it "puke green" http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/anim_puke.gif but I spanked the lot of them with the 455CI.:grinyes:
