Hi All,

Some of you may remember me posting a month or so back regarding my transmission slipping in the cold. At the time I was totally convinced that the tranny fluid was low, just based on the feel of what was happening.

Well, I took it to a good, reliable mechanic and had them reflush and fill it to spec. It did not fix the issue. Here's the whole story:

8 months ago (Roughyl), I had the tranny flushed for the 1st time. (Now I know why many say don't do it) Since then, the tranny seems to be slipping mostly in 1st gear. If I start the car on a cold morning, it will slip terribly in 1st gear for maybe the 1st 10 minutes that I drive it. However, after the car warms up, everything is fine. Since I thought it was low fluid, I had it reflushed at a different shop who I know know what they're doing. So they flushed and filled it to spec. The issue is still there.

To give you an idea what happens. If the car is cold and I am driving uphill, the engine will rev to like 2500, while the car is barely moving. I can't actually get it to go fast enough to change to second gear. (Perhaps I could if I floored it, but I'm sure that's not going to help the issue)

So having read all that, any ideas, or is it time to take it to a tranny specialist?

Well the flush of your system isnt good for one thing.
And to do it twice in a row :eek7:

When you flush the system you are not only flushing away the bad stuff it also washes the clutch materails off and this causes more slipping.

So you might want to take it to a trans shop.
They can scann the trany and see if theirs any codes which would indicate your slipping prob.

Good Luck!

Hi All,

Just wanted to update and let you all know that this eventually escalated to a complete failure. I've taken it to reputable specialists, likely I will be faced with a rather large bill. :frown:

Oh well, live and learn. Soon I will be rolling again and this will finally be off my mind.

Yeeeowzaa!

Just got the call back from the shop. Basically, they explained that there was a vavle stuck that was stopping the fluid from flowing through to all the parts. Since the fluid was not getting where it needed to be, all the clutches, torque converters and anything that relies on the fluid burned up..

Repair bill: $2900 CDN

Look on my face when I heard this: Priceless

Bye bye money, time to live on Mr. Noodles for 6 months or so, lol.

you could prob buy a used GT transmission with less miles than you might have and get it installed for that same price... just make sure and do the trans fluid with synthetic (exmpl: royal purple max atf) and new filter

I doubt that Gir.
A used 4t40 is about $1800-3000 depending on how many miles.
A GT trans 4t45 would be more by 10-15%.
Plus install, you are looking at close to $4k american money.
