94 grand am se.
Recently I started having some problems with my steering. Whenever I would turn right the steering would be stiff and I could hear it grinding. I decided to check it out today. When I looked at the steering gear I saw that the 2 bolts that mount it onto the firewall are separated from the firewall.

Has anyone ever had this problem and does anyone know how to get it fixed.

I had the same problem with a 92 corsica and just let it go to the junk yard.

Sounds like the steering rack is loose.

Does it thump or clunk when you turn the wheel back and forth rapidly ?

Probley should have it inspected.

I have heard of this before on this model and newr.
If the bolts are not striped then they may tighten up.

If they are striped, gonna need some work done.

here is a link that might help get a look and idea of what is wrong.

The bolts are fine but the metal part that they were mounted on has broken away so when I turn you see the rack move and the 2 bolts with a 3" piece of metal moving with it.

You had best becarefull !!!!

That could tare the rest of the way off and your steering wouldnt work :yikes:

This to is typical causing the mounting braket to break away from the subframe.
Sometimes it can be fixed(welded back on) sometimes it cant. Either way its not going to be a fun or easy task.

I am not driving it anymore, luckily I have a couple of vehicles. I may take it to a dealer and see if they can fix it. I took it to a body shop and they said they wouldn't work that close to the firewall. They probably just didn't want to mess with it.
