A lot of things can cause that. I would have a reputible mechanic check it out first if the cylinder truely is dead. If you're lucky it might be something small. But it could be something really big too. You never know. A lot of different things could cause that car to drop a hole. If you could describe it a little better we might be able to help. But I would still suggest having a mechanic take a look at it.

If it's for free, why not take it as long as the rest of the car is in decent condition. Without actually seeing the car it's not easy to say why one cylinder is "dead". It could be a mechanical or electrical problem. Do a compression test on all cylinders first to get an idea of the engine's condition.

I would check a rebuilder or get a price for a rebuilt unit from a parts store. You can buy parts but it usually is cheaper to get a rebuilt unit. Especially if you have never rebuilt one before.

Easier on the wallet and ass to just get a reman rack, install and rough in the alignment, then take it in to any alignment shop for a "toe and go" (should only run about 30 bucks).
