Power Steering/battery

Hi there, something strange happened to me while driving today...I was at a stop, when I accelerated again, the car jolted and my battery light came on, I thought that was weird enough, but at that moment, I realized that I had lost my power steering. When I found a place to park, I checked my fluid and it was fine,just to be on the safe side, I added some more. I checked the connections to my battery and they both were fine. Can anyone suggest anything here...

This sounds like a serpentine belt issue. As jonsonton stated check the belt tensioner as well as the belt. If it hasn't been changed recently then you will need to change it. Also purchase a new tensioner and replace the old one. This should cure the problems you are having.
