2000 Kia Sportage
DOHC, 152K miles

The week of Thanksgiving my wife's 200 kia sportage stripped the teeth off of the timing belt below the camshaft sprocket. I replaced the timing belt and car ran fine for 3 days. Then it started to idle very rough. Then last night December 8, the car stripped the timing belt again.

Any ideas what would cause this problem to reoccur. Is it possible something is seizing? All of the cam gears and crankshaft sprocket were aligned properly.

...stripped the teeth off of the timing belt below the camshaft sprocket....
..??..MOst of the time, the belt simply breaks at about 70,000 miles....so 152000 miles could suggest this was the 2nd change..or was it?
One plausible factor for last faiolure might be improper bender adjustment... was any other part changed at same time? Here is the complete instruction set just for comparison.

Seizing of crankshaft journals might also be a factor..but this would need some other factor like oil starvation...

When I replaced the timing belt, I also replaced the spring on the tensioner. I did not replace any other parts. I also have cleaned the IACV. Thinking this could be the cause of the rough idle. I do not know if this was the second timing belt or not. I bought the car at 82k. It has been a great vehicle until recently.

Well...just in case....you know the spring is not to keep the tension on the belt when the engine runs...it is there just to ease the initial adjustment..and then the tensioner bolt is tightened and the tensioner is steady. COrrect adjustment of the tensioner is critical.

Yes, I did tighten the bolt on the tensioner after checking the deflection of the timing belt. I am just very unsure of why a second timing belt would be stripped. It may be time for a pro to look at this one.
