Two things. (1) I'll say you must love that car. I would have sold it for parts by now. (2) You have been taken on one hell of a ride by your dealership especially if all three of the transmissions were changed for this same shifting problem. They either saw you coming or they are the most incompetent so called "mechanics" on this earth or both.

Step one is to read any fault codes that may be stored in the ECM. Step two is determine if its electrics or mechanics by doing a manual shift test. Disconnect the solenoids and shift through all the gears manually while driving down the road. If it shifts ok then it's an electrical problem and not mechanical. No need to change the tranny. If it won't shift correctly then there is a mechanical problem in the tranny and a REBUILD is in order. This is from a simple Haynes manual you can buy for $20.

This link is from the Factory Manuals section at the top of the forum. It is the automatic transaxle section. You'll see several schematics and there is not a TCM to be found (pages 200-215). Shifing is controlled by the ECM and the sensors that send it conditioning signals. The ECM inturn schedules the shift solenoid valves on and off to provide smooth shifting. You can read about it in the text sections in the file. http://tril.shineautoproject.com/camry/99/99EWD.pdf

If you are determined to keep this car you need to get away from this dealer. I recommend you find a competent mom & pop transmission or electrical shop and have them diagnose your problem. If it turns out your transmission was fine I would consider litigation against this sorry excuse of a dealership.

I'm sure a tranny expert, which I'm not, can give you some most likey cause directions. In the mean time, this is a start.
